Interesting thread for a year old. When I was 14, I got the Sears Craftsman 2XX pc "mechanic's tool set." Tall and short mostly 6pt 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" SAE & Metric sockets, screw drivers, and a set of SAE & Metric combo wrenches. That got me through oil changes, brake work, some suspension work, tune ups, etc.
Anything requiring pulling an axle nut pushed me into getting a Craftsman Air Compressor and basic air tools. I ended up getting a Harbor Freight Earthquake impact as well. Almost all of this between 10 and 20 years ago.
In the last year, I have bought the DeWalt 3/8" and 1/2" 20vMax impacts (and some Tekton impact sockets) and pretty much only specialty tools beyond that.
Honda front lower ball joints are on the upright, not the control arm. That requires a special press that isn't available for loan. I ended up buying the cups and an OTC clamp.

My other specialty tool win was the Mayhew 29910. It pulls Ford B, C and CD car inner tie rods (which are round with no slot) and is unavailable via tool loan.
