Basic garage door questions -- size, cost, etc

Hey!

I'm working out a budget for my new garage build. Anyone care to help guesstimate the costs of:

A. (1) insulated 18 x 7 door
B. (1) insulated 16 x 7 door
C. (2) insulated 8 x 7 doors

Are these standard sizes? If not, what are? Where does one shop for garage doors? What should I consider when selecting a door?

Best bet is to call a local company not a big one but not a huge one either. Check out amarr.com and look around they have alot of good info.

An insulated 18 x 7 should start at around 900 and a 16 around 800. If you are doing singles go with a 9 it gives a little more room than an 8 wide and not any difference cost wise. They should be around 550 insulated.

I will caution you to make sure that you have the right tools and know what you are doing if you are going to be installing a torsion spring. I have seen first hand how dangerous they can be. One mistake, and you can be seriously injured. They are like coiled up a snake and not ever knowing when it is going to strike.

Doors come in 2' increments and the hight of each panel is either 18" or 21". You mix and match the panels to get the desired hight of the door. In the smaller widths, you can get 8' / 9' / 10' wide panels. I would buy the best door that you can afford, because it is one item that you will probably have for the rest of the time you live in the home. Look at new home construction and find one of those guys and have them give you a price. You also get to see the quality of the door that they sell and how good of an installer they are. I had a 9' x 7' and a 9' x 9' doors installed this past spring and it took the installer all day to put them up. He was very experienced, and very neat and methodical. He made sure that they were leveled in all directions, and that they fit the opening perfectly. They glide up and down as if on silk rollers. No drafts either. At the floor, the concrete just wasn't perfect, so he added a rubber strip to seal the door to the floor, in addition to the rubber bulb insulation strip that went at the bottom of the door. I don't know the brand of the doors, but the openers are by Lift Master. 1/2 horsepower units with remote access pads outside, push buttons inside, and controls that go in the cars. My cost for the two doors and openers was about $1600 installed. I think that the R value is somewhere around 15, but don't remember for certain.

I had my doors installed by a professional. I built my entire building (excluding the foundation) I did the floor and all th wiring including the 330foot run to the telephone pole. I didn't think it was worth it to mess with the doors. These guys came in and blew the job out in one day. The doors have a r-value of 17. They were not cheap. I also got a commercial grade opener. I paid $3,600 for an 8X8 door,10 X 12 door the opener and I also had another opener on another garage I have installed. The whole job was one day. It was worth the money. I also had them on the smaller door follow the roof contour of the garage. It was installed on the non gabled end.

Like ngxxxxxxx above, I built my entire 24X32 building myself. Everything.. I'm cheap! Doors: I looked everywhere, then found a door supplier that also does installations. The doors are manufactured by Winsor, and come in increments of 8', 9', 10', 12', 16', 18' and 20'. I needed (2) 12' x 7' doors. They come both uninsulated and insulated. I bought the uninsulated doors, as I had been told by several people that factory insulated doors weren't so good. However, I found out later that the same door company that I got my doors from does door insulating at their facility. So, here's how it worked out:
2 doors 10' x 7' with all installation hardware= $ 781.10 tax included. 2 Genie 1/2 hp door openers from Home Depot= $ 344.54 tax included.
Next, I went back to the door company and purchased their insulation pkg for the 2 doors and am in the process of installing it (r-11 rating). $ 147.31 tax included. So, here's the total: $ 1272.95. I think that's cheap and that's me.

I followed nova65ss's suggestion and priced out a few companies that carried Amarr doors. I believe they have a list on their site. Lots of styles and mine is solid as a rock.
