I am new to this great forum, so I may have missed the answer to this question. If so, please point me in the right direction. I am wanting to light a newly-enclosed space that is 18 x 20 with 9 foot ceilings. I understand that I should shoot for 100 fc at benchtop height; I plan to use fluorescent to save money. The question is: HOW TO CALCULATE how many lights/fixtures are needed in the ceiling to get 100 footcandles at 36" height? Thanks.

Many lighting manufacturers have online calculators you can use. Here's Lithonia's calculator, for a typical 48", 2 lamp, T8 fluorescent fixture: http://www.visual-3d.com/tools/interior/default.aspx?id=14782
Just fill in the dimensions and the desired footcandles, you can leave the other blanks at their default setting.

100 footcandles? Wow. The link above seems like a good one. I have used GE's before also.
