Basic Plumbing Question

Hi folks,

I have a tub that I was hoping to install a shower head onto for an easier place to bathe my baby.

This was the plumbing I found when I removed the faucet, which was held on with a set screw. I'm sure some of you have seen this before, but I have not. Is there an adapter of some kind I can install on this that has a standard pipe thread on the other end so I can easily install a shower head?

Thanks in advance.

That is a proprietary connection from the maker to connect the downspout to the valve set.
I can understand you want to tie in a shower via an external hose but it means finding a rubber adapter to go over the spout.

You might ask the manufacturer if they make a spout for this fitting(with the o ring) that has a shower diverter valve thus the mouth of the new spout might have a screw-on adapter to which to mount the external shower hose and head.

Or you need to redo the whole thing and get a new valve assembly, new spout?, and showerhead (internal) but it means opening up a wall on the tub side or behind the tub.

Thanks for your response. That was what I was afraid of. It'll be a big job either way because it means either removing the tub or tearing into an external wall - neither of which is something I want to tackle. I'll try connecting with the manufacturer (if there is any info on the spout) or maybe jerry rigging something and seeing how well that works.

Is that a deck mounted Roman tub faucet? If so, do you have access under the tub?

ETA I was typing while you were posting. If you do not have easy access under the tub, then there is likely not an easy answer.

Yes, the faucet is deck mounted, and no, I don't have easy access under the tub, unfortunately.

Just punt and use a rubber adapter. You can google "garden tub sprayer" or "sink shower head". really ugly but probably solves the problem.

Thanks, I'll search for those. I'm ok with an ugly aesthetic - this is temporary, and function is most important to us with a 3 month old on our hands. :willy_nil

There is a simple spray hose device with a rubber end designed to "sort of" fit over the end of a conventional tub spout for the purposes of washing a baby or small child. It's not a high end deal, probably 10 bucks or so.

just for your waters safety realize your connection has now created a backflow potential

Curious to hear more about this. I had never considered this other than outdoor irrigation. Isn't that always the case with these types of shower heads that have a long hose? Or is that why shower head piping always terminates horizontally or downward. Hm. I will say that the original faucet (visible in the background) actually sits taller than this, but then curves downward to terminate, so that is probably how it resolves it. You've got me thinking of some sort of gen 2 update if I'm thinking along the correct lines.
