Chase, I thought about this too, you shouldn't use your real name, when this thread dies down create a new user account.

Now look, I'm glad you are excited about DIY stuff but you don't know what you plan to do with your tools for sure yet, don't know what career you will end up in, when and where you will end up living, and you don't have much money for tools yet, so be patient. Read my first post in this discussion. Save some money and wait, the soon to be USA Craftsman stuff might appeal to you and a year or two isn't that far off. I'm 35, I work in IT and only built up my tool collection in the last two years. Since I don't use them for work I built up a great homeowner/DIY set with just about everything I might need with a mix of USA and China Craftsman, some Husky, Tekton, Irwin, Stanley, Pittsburgh, Ryobi, Skil, Delta, and even Black and Decker, amongst others. I'll upgrade to a few more USA hand tools and some better battery powered ones later (like when I finish my basement). The thing is, for what I do (around the house stuff, breaks, oil, plugs, and maintaining some classic cars) that mix of stuff works just fine. Might be all you need too, but you might also become a mechanic or tradesmen or something and then you will need a higher grade of tools. Around here there are lots of people who will rush to tell you what you "need" and how only SK, Snap-On, or Milwaukee will do, truth is you don't know what, or what quality level, you will need or when you will need it. My advice is, be patient, save up and figure it out as you go.

And, M6er, you're arguing with a kid about the search function, cut him some slack.

Completely off topic but if you don’t mind what cars do you have? Also I have a pretty common name so I’m not super worried but I do plan to create a new account. But thank you for the concern I don’t mean that sarcastically as I guess it could be taken

I drive a 2009 Challenger R/T I bought new, my wife has a 4x4 2015 Cherokee. Then there's old car fleet my dad has but it's a family thing and I have one at all times in the garage. 1969 Charger R/T, 1971 Plymouth GTX (1 of 1 Export/Sunroof), and the one that's most me, in the garage right now, 1970 Road Runner 440+6.

OP, a a former perpetually broke kid myself I understand.

Storage, you enjoy woodworking and have a tight budget.

Make your own tool box or tote from recycled wood. Make it ad big or as simple as you want it.
I am 50 and build my own as a hobby. Because it's fun. Then I use them or make fake antiques for displaying old rusty tools.

Start with wrenches. One at a time and vary the brands (as if you have a choice) from the pawn shop bins. Use them and figure out which you like best by feel and fit.
Start with metric stuff as it is more used now.

I have no idea where you are nor need to know, but even HF freebie screwdrivers are decent users and you get them with the purchase of something else. A two for deal is great on a limited budget.

Pick and poke at the used market always bargain hunting, establish a friendship with some better flea market sellers, they help you find the good stuff like that.

Take your time and above all, enjoy the process. Learn from experience. Help a neighbor with his junk half a day if you can. It all adds up.

If it is good enough for the kits the military issues you should get good use of it.

A very durable unit.

Ok, I realize I'm a new guy here and this thread is several months old, but thought I could be of some help. I don't remember anybody mentioning Cripe Distributing on EBay. They sell a lot of new old stock Kobalt USA, Napa USA, some Armstrong stuff, and several other decent brands. Right now there is a brand new 3/8 SAE socket set for around $16 made by the J.H. Williams brand (another good brand). Hope this helps.

This is old, but i saw the other guy mention cripe, another source is pawn shops, you can scrounge their bins of loose tools and put together a set for virtually nothing. For less than $30 i had a complete set of sae and metric wrenches nearly all usa, some japan and germany. I dont mind having extras, different wrenches can fit in different spots so i have tons of doubles in my boxes.
