Can anyone recommend a good book that will show how to wire basic 110 and 220 circuits off an existing 200 amp panel?

Also, my panel has 12 open slots, and I want to run a string of maybe 10 110v outlets, a 220 recepticle for a compressor, and some lighting, and I'd also eventually like to finish my basement. Am I better off running a separate sub-panel out to my attached garage off the existing panel so I'll have more options when the basement gets done?

I have an older copy of this - it's inclusive and technical where it needs to be.

You can supplement it with a book from Home Depot or Lowes for some more basic items. But what you need to know to be safe and do a good job is in the Practical.

12 slots is quite a bit of free space. With careful planning you would use less than that, most likely. But having a panel in the shop could be more convenient in a number of ways. #1 to me is the ability to go to the main panel and shut off the garage/shop so you can add / rework / etc in the garage panel without issues. Just depends - but for 10 general purpose outlets, lights and a 220 run I imagine that might consume 5-6 slots in the panel.

Your library should have plenty of books on wiring, mine does. Save yourself the $$ and clutter and use one of theirs....

For the Canadians-don't waste your money on American books, there are too many subtle differences that may cause you to fail an inspection.Even interpretation between provinces varies widely! These books are a good reference and will lead you in the right direction.
