At the moment I've got this motor I'm going to try and rewire with the schematics I was given, any advice would be appreciated, from how to determine what's the start winding and the run winding, main winding and auxiliary winding, as I need to replace all the cracking cloth wire.

I used to accept challenges like this. Then very suddenly and almost without warning, I was 79yo. I cannot take on those events anymore.
I did a careful cleaning and partial rewire on an ancient General Electric 5 horsepower motor.
Soon it became first run time. There was a shower of molten copper balls dancing on the shop floor. I bought a new motor for the Old GE motor and John Barnes drillpress. I have tried to forget the Old GE motor.
BTW, the motor house was made from a microwave case.

I have no idea how old this Sears and roebuck motor is this motor came with Craftsman my metal lathe and originally I didn't trust this motor because of the decaying cloth wiring, but that other motor went out and I don't have the money to buy another one so I decided you know what I'll take a crack at this20240804_170709.jpg

The date code is "D 3 4".

I'm not too familiar with that date code format, but I believe "D" is the month April, "3" is the year 1943, and "4" is the week of the month.
Yeah that lines up with when I believe my lathe was made so this is probably the original motor to that lathe

Is there a capacitor in that model?
As far as I'm aware there was no capacitor

This post may help, but includes an inline capacitor.

I still have that Companion wiring assembly and could try to identify the stator wire colors.

Regarding the start winding versus the run winding... generally the wire gauge of start winding is thinner than the run winding.

Yeah if you don't mind that would be very helpful

I believe I've made some progress.
I'm still don't fully understand the wiring schematics here
