I recently bought a vacation home in Bass Lake, Ca that was built in 1956. The house is built on a hillside of granite rocks and they just built the house right on top of the granite. The garage is 20' x 20' and has a dirt floor, about half of the garage is a huge granite rock that we have been breaking out so we can get some footings and the floor poured.

Check out the picts and the time lapse video...

Big red X time.....

Looking forward to seeing this.

Went camping at Bass Lake on vacation for quite a few years when I was a kid - late 50's / early 60's. Even remember when the town burnt down and was rebuilt.

That is an awesome amount of work for a little flat ground. I don't think I have ever seen anything quite like it before on the Garage Journal. A real man's cave for sure.

I would love to have some of the large chunks of granite for border around my landscape. Do you think it would be too much trouble to ship it to me? Gratis?

How many actual hours in the time lapse ?

Are you going to chip out more ?

Think of all the money you are going to save by not having to pour a slab !

Love the video. I am a garden tractor fan and was surprised how well that cart handled that load, well until the last couple. I liked the fact that you could see the cart squat as the load increased. Hopefully it only blew the tire out and will live to work some more. Keep up the great posts (work).

I've worked on the boulder for a couple hrs for a few saturdays... I have pulled out about 25 carts full of of granite and I figure I'm 85% done. The video was made with a GO PRO HD Helmet Camera and it took a picture every 60 seconds.

I taco'd one of the wheels on the garden cart (cheap chinese rims) new wheels and tires now and cart works great. I used it to haul over 5 cords of cedar last weekend.

The guy in the flip flops is my crazy buddy... No Gold yet! LOL still looking :)

I love Bass Lake! :rocker:

My wife's family holds their family reunions there every other year...except this past year due to the work on the dam.

We stay at the Pines....which, if any of you have ever seen the movie, The Great Outdoors, this is where it was filmed, using the actual Marina and bar at the Pines.

Great looking place, workbench!

It's been a long time since I have updated this post... Ended up gutting the cabin and completely remodeling / updating the inside.

Now I am back working in the garage and on the outside. We put up a 5 1/2" x 16 1/2" x 21' glulam in the garage to get rid of the post that was in the middle of the garage. Now I have to finish removing the rest of the granite and get ready to poor a floor in the garage.

Here's a video of the beam going in: (special thanks to my dad for all the help)

Here are a few pict of the rest of the granite rock I am removing. Usually I just jackhammer the rock and it breaks up pretty easily. I decided to try Dexpan which is a non explosive demo agent. Basically you drill a bunch of holes poor in a slurry mix and wait for it to expand and crack the stone. Well I tried it and it worked but it was very slow and the time it took to drill all the holes I could have been done already. Here are some picts...

Day I bought it:

Smacked it with a Sledgehammer:

Still have about 2 hrs of jack hammering to go:
