I just happened to notice the shelf item at Lowes is $30 extra for battery backup model. Pretty hefty battery for $30. I guess replacement is $130 instead of $30 but not my problem.

I dont think it's quite fair to say it's a $30 battery. The units are different as well, with DC motors, an inverter and controls.

Either way, $30 is damn cheap when the power is out and you need to open the door but can't do it manually

I had a battery back up at my old house, probably bought it in 2012 or so, the battery died after 2-3 years, I think I used it once, came home and was wondering why the garage door was going up so very slowly...Anyway battery quit, I didn't replace it until we went to sell the house a few years later, I like the idea, but don't need another battery/maintenance items to replace on a regular basis. Maybe the battery tech has gotten better since then.

We have one that is about 3 years old in Wisconsin. Installer threw in the battery option when purchasing it. My opener is on a light switch so I can raise the door a little bit and stop it wherever, but not with battery backup. Got to try it out a couple weeks ago basically for the first time. I didn't know it ran at a slower speed, but not a big deal. I would probably replace the battery when time comes.

If you just press the button again while it's opening, it will stop and stay at thay point. The next button press will close it

I’ve got a chamberlain gdo with battery backup for ten years. I’ve replaced the battery twice
I do maybe twice a year shut the power to the opener and open the garage door just on battery to test it and last time the battery had still some power left but only for one up or down. Also the 12 volt 4AH battery is about $22 bucks on amazon but next time I’ll buy a Yuassa battery that most ups uses.

I have a very old Craftsman that has battery back up. Honestly I only remember using it 2 times. Once during a thunderstorm when we came home to no electricity, and once during the winter when we lost electricity.

As a former garage door technician your wires just hanging across the header and down the rail bother me so much lol
That's how they were and I didn't have a great way to improve. Would you go up to the ceiling then down the wall? It would add another 12ish feet

I installed a Chamberlain with battery backup back in 2014. Just this year, it started beeping at me that the battery had gone bad. It was pretty easy to replace and I think a new battery was about $20 on Amazon. So that's a 10 year life in a Midwest uninsulated garage.

I don't have a lot of power outages. I might not have replaced the battery. But the beeping was driving me crazy!

I got 8 years out of the battery in my Lift Master GDO. Used it a few times during an outage in the middle of it's life. Opened and closed just as if it was plugged in/getting wall power. No idea how many times it would open and close, but at least 2.

Bought the replacement off Amazon and was around $30 CAD.

my preferred is prewire when the house is built lol

However, yeah I would have ran it up to the ceiling, so that you could staple the wiring up and out of the way, then straight drop down to the opener.

BUT

If you are not having any issues with the carriage hitting the wiring strung along I suppose it works, just not the best way.
