I am tired of killing batteries as my car only sees the road about 10 times a year. Looking for a quality battery tender that will keep the battery charged but will not damage it of course. Would like a quality one and I am willing to pay. Its just a normal 12 volt car battery. Would prefer made in USA or at the very least not made in China. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

You're probably not going to avoid made in China. There's not much of a selection of these out there. Deltran's version is very well regarded. I have one and like it so far, but haven't owned it long. It is made in China.

That's easy, Battery Tender. I have one from 1996 that I've used on my motorcycle. I never take the battery out, in late fall, winter and early spring, or when I go away for a while I just plug it in, in my unheated garage. The battery that was in the bike then was 2 years old, it lasted until 2009. It was still starting the bike then, but cranking was slow.
Just plug it in and forget it. It won't overcharge.

i have two of the Deltran Battery Tender brand units and have used them since 2004 time frame. they have a 10 yr warranty. unfortunately, i did have to use the warranty once as one of the units died a few years ago. but the warranty was very easy... and they sent me a new unit.

Their HQ is there. They are made in China. I looked at mine right before I posted.

Battery Tender 021-0128 Battery Tender Plus 12V Battery Charger. Is this the one that you have? I too have a SS camaro that doesn't see the road to often thus needing a tender.

Work like a charm.

For faster charges I have an Old Skool big honkin' charger but the Deltran tenders are perfect for maintaining your battery.

As mentioned above you might want to look at Schumacher. They do chargers and may do tenders as well.

I had 2 battery tender brands ones. They both cooked my motorcycle batteries.

Go with Ctek or Optima if you plan to leave them on all the time.

That is the one I have. I store my car for about 5 months during the winter, and this is the first year I'm giving it a shot. They have very good reviews.

The Jr model isn't bad either, a friend of mine has that one.

I bought a NOCO Genius G3500. Works great, used it on car/truck and motorcycle/atv batteries. I had to order one to find out the box said made in China.

Not exactly on topic, but seven or eight years ago I put alligator clips on an old cell phone charger, I think it was 700 or 900 milliamps. Used it on my lawnmower for one summer with a poor battery. It worked. I use a harbor freight one now.

Recommend Battery Tender or similar that is micro-chip controlled to "maintain" and not just trickle charge all the time. Those cheap "trickle charge" type that run all the time can ruin your battery as they overcharge. Stick with a good one like Battery Tender.

While you're storing vehicle, be sure to put out all your rodent prevention or killing solutions (ie poison, traps, deterrents like dryer sheets, cinnamon, peppermint, etc.)

I had bad expereience in rural barn with Battery Tender running which actually attracted a large rat that liked the underside of hood to build a nest. Rat chewed through bunch of fuel injector wires on top of valve cover and even chewed through the live electricity wires of the Battery Tender!! Didn't know I had problem until noticed some straw UNDER the car which was falling down from top of engine from the rat's nest. Varmit had carried the straw from across the barn over to engine compartment. Now I've got habit of always leaving hood UP when vehicle is stored very long so every time you walk by you observe any underhood activities of potential critters . . PLUS lots of poison in corners of barn for "last meal" for those varmits.

My '01 Harley was built in Nov. of 2000. The Battery Tender was connected to it every winter. I replaced the OEM battery in the fall of 2010.

Same here - I have 2 of them and they work great for me. I got them new on Ebay, they were around $ 25 each shipped compared to around $ 40 in the retail stores. The Jrs work great on m/c's as well as cars - if I remember right they put out 750 mA compared to 1250 mA for the larger Battery Tenders.

They are made in China, I try to avoid Chinese stuff if at all possible, but these units have worked very well for me for about 6 winters now.

Pay a premium if you want, but I've been using HF's float charger on my '71 El Camino for about six years now. I only start the car once a month if that, and never have a dead battery. Before, the battery would be dead every time and I was replacing it about every eighteen months. I'm now still on the same battery after six years. I bought my Son the Deltran Battery Tender (w/extras) for Xmas a couple years ago for around $100+ because I didn't want to seem cheap. It doesn't function any better than my cheap HF one.

Use a 20% coupon and call it a day!

Yep. 750mA.

If you look at my S/N, that car uses an AGM battery thus the need to be careful as AGM's require charging at FAR lower levels than wet cells.

The BT Jr. has done just fine and done just well for my 2 other summer-only wet cell battery rides as well.

I'd love to know how one could fry the battery with one tho. I'd love to hear more about that .
They charge far lower than a std. shop charger and then drop down to a lower power trickle "maintain" microchip status once charged.

They're $40 retail for a reason.

Schumacher now makes their own version called the Extender SP2. Sort of a cross between a CTEK and a Battery Tender. I have lots of different chargers and maintainers, including a couple of Battery Tenders (a single and a dual channel), the new Optima 1200, older Vectra maintainers, etc. I like the Extender because it is one amp, auto ranges between 6 and 12 volt batteries, comes with the usual clamps as well as a commonly used charging pigtail and most handy, a 20ft power cord. Like any modern maintainer, it has a microprocessor controlled charging process that won't cook the life out of the batteries like a simple trickle charger can. I'm happy with it, I've used it on tractor and generator batteries, random vehicles, and it is currently keeping the battery in my parked-for-the-winter MINI Cooper S happy.

SP2_Product_Accessories_2.png

Pros: Small size, odd but convenient shape, three different color status LEDs (they form the big "X" on the unit), nice clamps and charging pigtail compatible with Battery Tender and other accessories, 20ft power cord and 6 foot charging cord, not sealed shut like some other brands (can be repaired).

Cons: Not waterproof, but can be left under the hood while connected in the weather, no cigarette lighter adapter included.

I recommend this unit. I monitored the operation with my pile of test equipment and found it does follow the typical4-stage charging and maintaining cycle, but not sure if it adjusts for temperature extremes. I bought mine from Wally World for about 40 bux, recently I picked up another at $35 dollars to give as a gift, I think that is the current regular price. Amazon wants $45 last I checked.

If you are looking for a charger that has more oomph but can also be used as a long term maintainer as well, the new Optima 1200 is the dog's ********.

Did you buy from "brick and mortar" Wally Mart or Wally online GreatBear?

Aside from the "gimmicky" X-Box looking interface, it seems the real deal. I like Schumacher chargers but all or most have to be ordered online which limits returns if unhappy since electronic in nature.

I want a new charger and was looking outside the box.

As for the sleeping MINI, it sounds like you need a JCW to replace it with. Wait...what?...LOLOLOLOLOL.
