From what I've heard on https://reddit.com/r/autodetailing it sounds like the Bauer polisher isn't as good as the old model -- I don't know specifics though. I'd be interested at some point, since I'm beginning to take care of my own cars a little more intensely but don't have the coin to justify a large investment.

I’ve got the original Chicago Electric Platinum version and am very happy. That said, I’ve watched YouTube videos about the Bauer and it appears it’s better in a few areas (cord, grease) and worse in others (internals). I’m pretty sure they put a combination of snot, glue and caulk in mine as an attempt at lubricant. I repacked that on day 1.

The Bauer appears useable right out of the door, and it’s not THAT different from what I’ve got now. I’d probably give it a shot as the next nearest competitor is the Porter Cable DA found online for $110.

I have the bauer brand and used the old coupon to get it for $59. It worked good on the one panel I polished, It is not super well balanced, hands will definitely get a work out!

Change the backing plate. Any and all reviews say the Harbor Freight backing plate *****. You’ll like it a whole lot better with that change. I had a new one before I ever used mine.

Not sure, did they discontinue their older $50 one and rebrand it to Bauer for more $$$? That would be sleazy.

I had two of their old one and it was very good..

You can get backing plates on Amazon. I have the original Chicago Electric version and I bought the Astro backing plate (I believe it was a 6”) before I even used it. It worked very well and never had an issue with it.

I have one that a got a little while ago. There are not a ton of options for a Dual Action (DA) polisher with an 8mm throw if you don't want to spend a fortune. It seems like a pretty solid DA if you do make some tweaks (below). The Porter Cable DA is almost double the cost and I've seen it, not worth the extra money over the Bauer. I got my Bauer for $59 with coupon. I always look to see if there is a coupon before I buy anything at Harbor Freight and try to avoid bigger ticket impulse buys.

I have seen at least 3 different videos comparing the old HF and Bauer. I suppose it really doesn't matter as the old one is NLA and the only ones i saw on eBay they wanted a fortune for it.

I did two things immediately when i got mine. First a better quality backing plate. I wanted a 5" and I bought a Meguiars set along with pads. I also got some additional Chemical Brothers pads as well. I don't have any big vehicles like trucks or vans so i wanted something just a bit smaller and 5" seems like the sweet spot for availability of quality pads.

Second I did regrease the head on mine and while it was ok I think i got a better quality lubricant (Super Lube) and it is definitely a bit quieter and smoother now as it runs. There are some really good videos on Youtube if you want to know how to do this. Example

I am careful not to overstress the tool, not so much that I don't think the tool will last but i don't want to mess up the paint. So far so good.

thanks for the inputs. I bought the Bauer today, and an assortment of pads. I was going to practice one of the garden tractors before trying it on a car.

I have the old Porter Cable DA polisher. Basically the model all these others copied. You really dont have to worry about practicing much with this thing. Its not NEARLY aggressive enough to ever come close to doing any sort of damage to paint. Think of this as a powered hand wax or polishing. Its really just gonna make things a lot faster (and easier) than doing things by hand, but it wont be aggressive enough to do bad paint correction, let alone damage anything. Just use the machine to spread out the product - or do that by hand, let it haze, and then remove with the machine. I usually do one panel at a time, or half a panel. You’ll get use to it very quickly. Its pretty idiot proof.

The PC was my first machine to wax and compound the car. It does work very well for maintenance and shining things up. I’m sure the HF model does just fine. I also have HF’s cheapest rotary polisher that i bought to fix the paint on a black car that was sitting under a tree for a few years that i decided to sell. Even with those - the “dangers” of damaging paint are HIGHLY exaggerated online. I think spending a lot of money on machines like these isnt necessary. They are spinning a pad. That’s ALL they do. The biggest visual effects you’ll see will be from the products you use. I highly recommend Mequiar’s Ultimate line of compound and waxes. I have a tool box filled with many different ones i tried, and the Ultimate worked better for me than even their professional line and many others. Their compound removed stains in the paint and sap damage MUCH faster and easier then everything else i tried. It left the paint much shinier too. Their claim is the compound starts off being more aggressive, and breaks down as you remove it, becoming less aggressive and leaving the paint in better shape. When i first started, the car looked so bad, and i tried the PC with little results that i thought I’d be stuck wet sanding the entire car. In the end, I think i spent $49 on their black polisher, a wool pad, and Meguiar’s Ultimate compound and wax did the trick.

Do yourself a favor - stay away from all these ******* YouTube videos from places SELLING stuff. It makes you feel like you need to spend money on **** you dont need, and stuff that will make NO difference to how the car looks when youre done. Its become a contest about “who spent the most money” to maintain a BRAND NEW car.. of COURSE its gonna look great. Walk into most body shops and the guys that do detailing for a living are still using the same wool pad they used 20 years ago for everything. All this **** they sell today is unnecessary.

I even have the cordless Milwaukee models now - but STILL haven’t used them. (I had gift cards to use). But again - the products you use will make the biggest difference.

This is a really old picture, and its not from “right after” fixing the paint, but a few weeks before this - that car looked like hell before the compounding and rims were put back on. There was not one shiny part on the paint. Spots, scratches, and sap covered everything. You’ll have to take my word that close up, EVERYTHING was removed. Even with a ****** camera 20’ away u can see theres reflection off the side.. you dont NEED to spend lots of money for results. Use the the DA, see how you like it. If you need something more aggressive buy their cheap rotary polisher and a wool pad.

And actually i think this is polisher i bought.. its only $39 now without coupon.

thanks, I'm looking to do more waxing maintenance, and thought the Bauer would save time. The cars I have a couple years old.

Do you ever use clay?

I have in the past. Don't anymore.. it works to remove embedded stuff.
You can put your hand inside a ziplock bag, mist a part of the car and out the bag over that spot. If you run your fingers inside the bag and you can feel little bumps in the paint, clay will remove it. You can use a spray bottle with soapy water as lube for the clay.

My Bauer polisher works good. It's better because of the dual orbiting action. DA.

You can get the backing plates from Amazon, pads too. I’d highly recommend doing that. Chemical Guys, Lake Country and Meguiars among other good pads/backing plates.

I’ll agree with KCTYPHOON about not getting overwhelmed with products. I like Griot’s Complete Compound but Meguiars Ultimate Compound is every bit it’s equal.

Keeping it simple, Meguiars Ultimate Compound and Meguiars Ultimate Polish can be bought at Walmart. You’re done.

Good luck! It’s a bit scary the first couple of times. I’m still a newbie, but I’ve got enough old cars to practice on, I’ve done more than most newbies. lol.

There are two types of detailers; the hobbyist and the one that wants there car clean. Pick which one you are and the products for that. I like to detail as a hobby and own a wide variety of products. Like any field, you can get lost in the madness.

The HF DA work just fine for a beginner. Just make sure you get a decent compound and polish, plenty of pads (please more than one cut and polish), and good set of microfiber towels.

If I were to start again as a beginner, I would get a HF DA, Lake Country Backing Plate, 6 each of Lake Country Flat Orange and White Pads, Griots BOSS line of compounds and polishes, and The Rag Company Creatures and Edgeless 365s.

Edit: If you want to learn more about detailing, watch videos from the Rag Company. Great source of information and quality towels.

Also don't get the cheap stuff.

You need 12 pads to detail your car?
You can wash them ya know :)

Anyway - another tip on wheel cleaner for people - cause you get RAPED buying the spray bottles one at a time in the store. If you really are into washing your car a lot, go buy a cheap $9 1 gallon pump sprayer, and buy a gallon of concentrate wheel cleaner off amazon.. you can dilute the cleaner down and wind up with serval gallons of cleaner for under $20. The pump sprayer is a much easier way to apply it rather than going through 1/3 of a bottle of $13 spray bottle wheel cleaner every time you clean the car.

And if you wanna go overbaoard with like “ultra soft towels” for not a lot of money - i actually just found these in my house the other day. I forgot i even bought them, still in the package. So i cant give a longevity testimony, and i spent years before this using cheap Costco microfiber towels with no complaints - i can tell you these things are crazy soft. You DONT need these things, BUT if you want like “dedicated polishing towels” for the $ these seem really nice.
AULLY PARK 800gsm Ultra Thick Plush Microfiber Car Cleaning Towels Buffing Cloths Super Absorbent Drying Auto Datailing Towel Gray (16 in. x 16 in., Pack of 6) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I98TYJ2/?tag=atomicindus08-20

And if you REALLY wanna shine and maintain a freshly waxed car - the absolute best polish ive EVER found - is the factory polish for motorcycles. They come in aerosol cans. Ive used the honda and Suzuki polish AFTER the car has been waxed - and i challenge anyone to find something better than this. I’m willing to bet all these crazy expensive spray on things you see around these days - is the same plastic polish bike shops have been selling for years. This stuff is incredible. I didnt look around for cheap prices or anything, just posting the first picture i found. You can seriously use this stuff on everything, even the wheels. Ya know how the car never looks the same after you wash it again, AFTER you spent hours polishing it up? - try this, just once after you wash the car. Spray it on, and just rub it in with a soft towel like 1/2 a panel at a time.. there might be a dozen other similar “cleaner and polish” type stuff, that market themselves as “new” stuff - but the motorcycle companies have used this **** for years. The rest of the world is finally catching on.

Best cheap dashboard cleaner ive ever used - try Pledge.. dont use that greasy armorall ****.
All that Armorall type stuff use to leave everything greasy, and it would become a dust magnet. Just once, try lemon pledge to clean the dash with a soft cloth.. ya know, something made to keep dust OFF. One bottle at the store is what, $6?. You might even already have it in the house. Spray it on the microfiber towel and apply. Just try it once..

If it makes you feel better - i can print out “professional auto detailing” labels, stick them on the cans, and charge you 4x the price..

I looked at the Rag Company youtube channel and couldn't a Waxing for Dummies video. I thought this one from Stauffer Garage was basic, more the level I'm looking for. I waxed the 2016 Accord last night and it looks good. The finish on the car is good, the wax is more a preservative.
