Came across the site a few weeks back and thought I might as well share my new Garage/Shop build. I've noticed a common theme on this site where many people have longed for years to have a space to call their own and be creative. I think it's a really deeply seated draw for us and it's nice to follow along with the excitement as their garages take shape!
My wife and I decided to build a house and have a baby in the same year.....I know....everyone said we were crazy and they might be right! But baby is due in 2 weeks the house in 4 and we haven't killed each other yet! The Garage is just breaking ground now so I'll have a chance to document the build. I won't be doing much of the construction of the envelope myself as I work out of town at the moment but plan to make it 'my own' after lock-up.
My avatar is a rendering of the concept. It's 28'X40' for the garage/shop with the 12'X8' "L" serving as my office and hang-out spot!
I'll post the first pics later this week.
Mark

Nighttrain, I checked out your build! Wow!...that's some serious square footage!
I like how you've recycled the cabinets. I plan to find creative (cheap!) ways to get set-up too. That's half the fun!

Also, the false front on the office is really cool!

Thanks mallen, Half the fun is just trying to come up with something I will enjoy working in. I can't wait to finish the garage so I can start on a project in there.

For sure!...I've never really had a place to work before and the list of things I want to do and try is pretty long!...

I actually tried posting a pic just now but they all seem to be too large! Will have to ask someone help me re-size them tomorrow at work.

Dave...checked out your build...really nice! I wanted to have an upstairs too but am restricted in height by code.
The terrain you built in reminds me of ours...heavily treed and rocky.

View from the house.
Garage site is at the back of the property where the logs are decked. The sloped lot presented some challenges getting materials and equipment in place.

Some of the lumber that was sawn from the trees that needed to be removed for the site prep. We hated to take down some of the large cedars and firs but it had to be done.

This wasn't a tree....just the old stump that we really liked so we had it relocated out of the way of the clearing.

That's funny!...I just returned from checking out your build and you had posted here!! You're garage looks sweet! Nice score on the lights!
I'm going to leave the outside to match the house but will also be going retro feel inside. My guiding theme is 'pre-plastic'....so anything up to 1959 basically. Will keep everything functional but try to get that old school feel.

Got the foundation poured yesterday. The challenges of the steep lot continue.... The first two batches of concrete went smooth as the truck was full and had traction backing up the gravel driveway. But when we needed just a yard and a half to finish the job, the cement truck was too light and spun out. With the risk of the cement setting up in the pump hose, time was becoming an issue!
Luckily a friend was working just a few lots over with his hoe and baled us out by filling his bucket up a few times and dumping in the pumper!
We will pour the slab as soon as the weather permits.
Forms will be stripped on tuesday.

Yeah, the develpment was done a few years back but didn't really get going until recently, I believe due to the economic downturn. The lots that are getting develped now are the ones highest up.

I did the calculations for a four post lift and the two vehicles I plan to use it and the ceiling clearance was getting to the point of maybe having to let some air out of tires!!....so we decided to push the wall height up an extra foot to be on the safe side. It now has two 9'x9' bay doors and an 11' wall height.

The "Office/Hang Out" wing is looking a bit out of proportion now with it's small footprint and rising fairly high.

The south facing man door opposite the bay doors. Two 4'x4' windows face the house and the view beyond.

While we were gone having the baby the guys flew at the framing! It was great to come back and see that the building had taken shape!
