MONTEVIDEO, Minn. — A man died Friday afternoon at a western Minnesota auto shop after he became pinned between a pickup and a tool chest.

Richard Fultz, 55, of Montevideo was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries he suffered in the accident at Backstreet Auto in Montevideo, according to Capt. Ken Schule of the city's police department.

Schule said Fultz was assisting Backstreet Auto owner Sidney Winters with the brakes on a pickup truck.

According to statements from the scene, Winters drove the truck on a lift as Fultz helped direct him. Winters told law enforcement that he pushed the brake down to the floor with his toes, but accidently hit the gas pedal with the heel of his foot.

The truck rolled over the safety bump at the end of the lift and hit Fultz, pinning him between the truck and a tool chest that was up against a brick wall.

"There was no give," Schule said Monday.

Schule said Fultz was a good friend of Winters and would help him occasionally by working at the auto shop.

The incident is being investigated as a tragic accident.

Speaking of accidents in Minnesota, this was in the news this morning as well - I know there are a couple people here in the process of moving or lifting garages, so be cautious with your lifting methods.

A northern Minnesota man was killed Sunday when a small home he was helping to move onto a foundation fell from its supports, trapping him beneath it.

Joshua L. O’Brien, 25, of Blackduck, died and two others were injured in the accident, which occurred shortly before 11 a.m. outside Kelliher in Shotley Township, about 60 miles north of Bemidji on the south shore of Upper Red Lake.

According to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Kelliher and others were working to place a small home on a foundation when the house fell from the jacks, wood posts and concrete blocks being used to lift and support the building. O’Brien was trapped underneath it.

Fire and rescue workers were able to pull O’Brien from the building and tried to save him but were unsuccessful. Christopher O’Brien, 52, of Blackduck, was taken by helicopter to a Grand Forks hospital with unknown injuries. Matthew Hjelden, 49, of Cloquet, was taken by private vehicle to receive medical care. Their conditions are unknown.

A tragic incident, to be sure. It's even more tragic when looked at through the lens of a dispassionate third party. Standing in front of a truck with no brakes being driven onto a lift seems like an accident waiting to happen.

I absolutely do not want to sound like an armchair quarterback, so I only say that as a reminder to all of us to take a second to think about where we're standing, putting our hands, what we're stepping over, etc.

Especially if there is another person working with us, whose actions you can't control.
