Recently I bought a Beacon Morris 45K BTU natural gas heater for my garage.

http://menards.com/main/heating-coo...irect-vent-garage-heater/p-1312847-c-6865.htm

It has a power vent for exhaust and separate combustion capability. Beacon Morris sells a concentric vent kit to pull the intake air and push exhaust through the same pipe -- however the cost of the kit is almost 1/2 the cost of the furnace itself.

Is there any reason I couldn't run a separate pipe to the attic or into the vented soffit in order to pull in fresh intake air while piping the exhaust out the roof like normal?

Without trying to dig through the info on the unit you bought, the short answer is; yes, there is a reason why you can't do that.

The "separated/sealed combustion" kits for most unit heaters include a forced combustion blower to deal with the added static pressure of ducting the intake air. Without this blower (and related controls), the burner won't fire properly.

You CAN however provide an intake pipe terminating close (but not connecting to) the fresh air side of the burner assembly but this doesn't make it a separated combustion unit and it's still susceptible to negative pressure within the space.

For the record, the concentric kit doesn't "...pull the intake air and push exhaust through the same pipe", the concentric kit actually consists of two pipes: an intake pipe and an exhaust pipe with the exhaust pipe running inside the intake pipe.

Thanks for the information..

Here is a link for the concentric kit for this particular model.

I don't see what about this kit can cause it to be $175. There is no added blower motor that I can see. Although when you mentioned that I thought that could account for the higher price of the kit, it doesn't appear in the kit contents.

Here is a PDF link for the kit.
