bead roller speed control setup

I just bought a dc motor and want it to run on a foot pedal with variable speed control and forward and reverse. Do I still need a dc speed controller or just a foot pedal or both? just trying to be able to plug into wall and use. I wasl told that the dc speed controller would allow me to do this.

What voltage is the motor?
I have seen a couple guys use 12v motors and run them off of car batteries and a reastat.
Otherside you will need a DC controller.

On mine I use a 3ph motor and a VFD and then use the two foot pedals to trip the VFD

Lookup the court jester on you tube, has a slick way of making a throttle pedal for a roller. He used to sell plans for the roller, not sure if he still does. Really nice roller too.

A dc speed control will allow you to control the speed. It will typically have a speed control knob and a forward/reverse switch on its panel. You can either use a pair of pedals, one for forward and one for reverse, or switch directions at the panel and use a single pedal for off/on.

Attempting to control the speed with a rheostat type foot pedal isn't a good idea. While its easy to keep a pedal depressed and move around a bit as you feed the stock thru the rolls, its near impossible to hold a variable speed pedal at a constant rate when any body movement is necessary. If you're in the middle of a tight turn, or any other situation that requires a low speed, the least bump of your foot on a variable pedal will result in a scrapped part most of the time.

I assume you have a gear motor rather than just a standard DC motor. Somewhere around 20 rpm is the upper end for speed on a bead roller with 2" rolls. This gives you a speed of about 10 feet per minute. Most work is going to be done at half or less of that max speed to maintain good control of the part. A gear motor is the only way to achieve smooth operation at 5 to 10 rpm.

This thread comes up when googling for "dc shunt forward reverse permissive interlock" so I hope it's ok to drag it back from the grave?

Metlmunchr: Sounds like you know how to wire up a pair of foot pedals, possibly to a KBMD-240D _without_ the optional forward-reverse switch on the panel, to achieve forward-reverse control, am I right?

Trying to figure it out myself is giving me a headache. Can you enlighten me?
