Beam needed for garage build

Hello all,

I'm building a detached garage with a bonus room above. The garage is 35' wide by 33' deep. We've finished the foundation and framed the walls with 2x6 studs. Question is now, what do we need to span the 35'. I plan to use a 8x8 post in the center to support whatever beam is used to span the 35' distance. Could anyone recommend a solution? Thanks in advance.

Did you incorporate a footing for the 8x8 into the foundation?

^ Good question, here is another one.

What lateral support do you have for that 35' wall that sounds entirely open?

Edit: In reading this again, I now think he is asking about a beam to support the floor above??

You need trusses.

- No beam required.
- No column required.
- 3x easier to install. (A crane is required either way, but the truss company can take care of that, too.)
- Trusses come with free engineering.
- You can also get styles that will give you the vaulted roof you are looking for.

You need a bit more info to spec out a beam such as dead and live loads expected on the second floor as well as any transferred loads from above (roof/another floor/attic). It seems you'll only have a 17' span if you put a column mid span so the beam should be rather modest unless you have some unusually heavy loads.

You will need an engineer to do the calcs and stamp any plans.

I'm guess this build is a fly by the seat of your pants build. Did you build a pocket or a place for the beam to sit in the wall ?

Question is now, "what do we need to span the 35'".

Answer is an engineer as stated in #2, #7 and #8 posts.

I spanned 28' with no beam or support columns needed in my garage using wood I-Beams. The turn into my garage from a small driveway made me go this route. Mine are 14".

I did the drawing with the help of a builder and the engineer at the place I bought the I beams and LVL's reviewed and stamped the drawings after a couple of small changes.

I have a floor above as well which is also open with no walls or upright supports. The ridge pole is 3x14" LVLs with common dimensional lumber for the rafters. No trusses. No crane. The ridge pole spans the 24' of my 24'x28' addition.

I live in MA. In my particular area they are a little tough code wise. I don't know where you are but if you are in Cali for example this may not fly due to earthquakes.

Any good lumber yard will have span tables for LVLs or possibly even wooden I-beams. You might be able to do it with out any columns.

If those won't work or you need a have a VERY HEAVY "live load" (like a real hay loft), then a flat truss will work, either wood or metal.

That's what I'm reading!
So, I can only imagine what's been done so far; bringing an engineer in at this point is a safety stop. Wonder what it will take to make it "right"?

You could use a flitch beam to span 35'. But you will need engineered lumber columns to transfer those loads to the footings.

Wow, it's kind of late in the game to be designing the building. How did you get permits without construction drawings?
