Subscribed. I have a Snap-On splitter, but no coupler bolts. I've just been using sections of threaded rod and pairs of nuts, but I've been considering the Shankley set too.

I have the harbor freight version of that kit and a Matco version. The threads on the puller adapters stripped and pulled out of the splitters the first time I tried to use it which is why I have the Matco kit. The bearing splitters are decent and are useful in the press but are made of a little weaker material than the Matco kit.

Just curious, have you looked on ebay for used Proto or Snap On or even older US-made OTC separators and pullers? You buy them and will never have to question if they will fail or if anyone has good luck with them.

Checked out eBay after your message. Nothing makes sense. I guess either HF or Shankley then. Given no more 20% coupon from HF, I think I am going to get the Shankley. Paying full price at HF feels strange.

I have the OTC bearing splitter set for 5 years now and couldn't be more happier though made in Taiwan. Not sure if it's made in USA now but better than china. For pullers, OTC and Posilock are my go to.

I have the harbor freight version and has been working fine compared to my old used Proto version that walked away and needed to get one in a rush. I've abused it and no problems yet. The key was to clean it up and grease the threads. I guess I got lucky in the Fall as I used a 20% coupon and was cheaper than anything I could find online/amazon and they all look very similar to each other.

How often will you need it? I usually take advantage of the local auto-parts store "loan-a-tool" program when needed.

What doesn't make sense?

I don't know maybe it's just cause we use them a lot harder then the home guys but I'll don't buy cheapo pullers, the price is ok til it blows up on you on a job and you have to go get something else. OTC, Proto, Posilock, I think I've got a few rando truck ones mixed in but OTC is our goto.

I tried one of those kits. It didn't work. Bent rods. I returned it. I have an OTC kit I spent significantly more money on. In my case, the down time and delay wasn't worth that particular attempt at cost savings.

I don't have a press. That particular tool has substituted for both puller and press.

I am satisfied with the OTC kit.

How do you use it as a press? turning the nuts on the two legs?

For the stuff I am doing recently, table saw bearings, drill press bearings, small lathe spindle bearings, drill chuck disassembly/assembly, etc using the flat face of the splitter is effective. Not a replacement for a press to be sure, but it works well enough for the applications i ask of it.
