Beating a dead horse....

I leave the site for a few hours every day, and when I come back, it seems that 50% of the posts are people beating a dead horse just trying to continue to make their point of view that they have previously stated. As a result of this, I am at the point where, if a post has more than a few replies, I don't even bother opening it. The simple reason is that most of what is posted is just plain bickering over what the correct response should be or is. Is it my old age and intolerance for this childish behavior coming to the surface, or is it my incorrect perception of the postings????

i don't know junk.......i go back and forth on that subject. most times i pass over them but sometimes you are compelled to post if it's a subject that really matters to you. is it me or do you think it had gotten worse in the last several month's?

Yeh....... I'm so new to the internet..... I can't even remember when I purchased my first computer, but I know it was in the 1980's. Back when I was single, with an endless supply of $$$$ and didn't care how I wasted money, I bought and used the newest and best technology available. I had a microwave oven in 1970, when most people didn't even know what they were. In 1971, when most people were spending $3500 for wheels, I blew over 25K a new Rolls on a whim. I've been around a lot of Internet sites, but I don't waste time on those that are not worth visiting. The Garage Journal was the exception. It seems that the problem has been exacerbated in the last few months. With age comes wisdom...

In fairness to Junkman, he did take a swipe while Junks teeth were bared, and his back hair was up.

Junkman, I think this site has changed a great deal in the last 3-5 months or so. I cannot say how or why, but many names I don't know, and many that I do know, I no longer see posting. I do not know if some old timers are silently dropping off or what, but there has been a shift in some way.

I have discussed this with several of the old timers here, and I have not had anyone disagree with that idea so far, so it isn't just you and me or one or two others. As I shared in a thread earlier today AFAIK Wilbilt called it quits with GJ last week, so I imagine there have been a few others that I was just not aware of.

As for beating dead horses, I would be guiltier than most, not good but true. I will try to reign that in if I can but I will make no promises.

You may just need a break Junkman, happens to the best of them.

I'd say that it becomes pretty easy to become repetitive about a topic on any online forum. Some people are just too lazy to search old threads. Some are maybe wondering to see if anyone else has any fresh/new input. Just because alot of people here have an opinion on a subject now doesn't mean that in 3-4 months the total collective will have added everything they can to that one thread on that one subject. If that makes any sense at all?

I'm honestly glad to see there are some new faces and fresh blood showing up in forums.. it sometimes adds some interesting diversity, etc. However with it will inevitably come some BS.

On this site there isn't a FAQ or articles on common subjects. However the top threads directory should be useful to some/alot but not everyone looks at it. Maybe certain "basic" subjects....... say "where do I buy drawer liner material" that is covered often, etc. Should be written up in article format. I'd volunteer to pen a few even. Maybe start a "common questions" forum or a spot on the front page of GJ with "articles on common subjects"... someone pen's a basic article.. everyone can interject & add to it as time roles on but its always linked in one spot. Someone asks a question thats covered.. someone links the article/thread and references the user to the "master thread". In theory thats a good idea... in practice it won't always happen.

Its the internet.. its all about the free exchange of ideas, commentary, etc, etc... sometimes the info repeats. Sometimes the info *****.. sometimes you get sick of seeing the same subject over and over again. However... as a collective I think this is a great site that has really pulled in a very diverse audience of people and for that alone its simply awesome.

I think alot of new comers will pop up and then move on. Speaking from experience, alot of new members don't know how to react, or not react.
They will learn, and try to become a productive member, after their mistakes, or just leave. So I think all the real multi-year seniors, should just stick it out, an ignore some of the redundant threads, they will fade away. That's just my two cents, for whatever it is worth.

We have lost some long time members and for whatever reason, they feel that this place is no longer welcoming to them. The dynamics of any board changes over time -- that's just the nature of things. We still have a great core group of talented and knowledgable guys who don't mind posting their projects and discussing things out in the open. That should get us through this "dry spell".

Hate to read that Wilbilt called it quits. I always read his posts. Franz I do not miss at all. Fairlane I enjoyed. I didn't take all his posts too seriously and I always looked forward to his yearly July 4th run in with his neighbors. It seemed like a tradition. This is still the only forum I read everyday and post to regularly and I don't want to see it fade away like some that I participated in a few years ago.

When I was young I didn't understand that -- I thought I needed to make sure everyone knew I what I thought about any given topic. Some people are insecure enough to require reinforcement. Some people think they can't be wrong. Most people make decisions based on life experience which is purely anecdotal, and therefore a poor approach. But who wants to take the time or make the effort to decide everything scientifically?

Forums like this help far more than they hurt. How many people praise it for all it's wisdom? I've picked up a lot of useful information here and I'd rather take the good and put up with the bad than not use it.

there has been some complaints of dragging up old posts.......most were questions of where to purchase a tool or looking for someones opinion before purchasing an item so bringing it back up was kind of irrelevent but most of it was people just having fun (unfortunately at someones expense).

i think the reason for this thread is the endless arguing that goes on in free parking. and yeah i have been playing along but it is pointless since there is no chance of changing anyone's mind or even being able to get a point across for the most part

You old timers gotta know, the same issues will be coming up over and over again. I come here to learn, extend my POV, show my shop and resto work (and lately, call out BS'rs like RobertG!). I like the guys on here - the "community".

You old timers should know that many of us haven't seen your shops or projects though and should feel OK re-posting them, or showing them as part of your feedback. I think anyone would like to see different workspaces more than a few times.

it's the nature of bulletin boards to have ups and downs. here it seems like spring brings new garage builds and new projects; christmas brings new tools; then there are months where all the posts are snap-on vs. craftsman or something else that i don't care to read about. when it gets bad, i take some time off.

sometimes i have my gripes with this board and go away for a few months:
-frustrated with tool snobs
-monuments to money
-man lounges
-pointless threads

then i remember how much i like tools and projects and come back:
+real world tool experiences
+clever tool/storage ideas
+project ideas
+garage builds
+camaraderie

so it's a mixed bag. if you're feeling a little tired of the board, sit out for a few months and return with new enthusiasm.

I am very happy to be a member of this forum. If it were not for this group of poeple I would have never thought about vinager for rust problems. I have learned so many other things along with ideas on shop design. I will remain a member and hope that the great old minds stick around also. Knowledge is the most powerful tool in the universe and I want to know all that you know.

In the case where there is more than one page and the topic is of 'some' interest, I just click on the last page after reading the first page.....kinda like reading a book...you get the plot of the book in the first chapter and find out what happens on the last page....

There seems to be a over abundance of testrone flexing. Check out the gallery section.... a great amount of flexing there IE size(length,width AND height), power, hvac, insulation, paint color, home theater, sound system, flooring, wall covering, lighting, work benches, cabinets, all speced and some even included in personal signitures. "Man Cave"? It seems that size does matter. We have gynormous egos and each believes that he/she has the perfect answer or solution. There is a huge wealth of knowledge here but also " no money, no time, no room, no idea, no clue, no hassle, etc". We should all know that you can not get something for nothing. Garages/shops are inheriently expensive. We dont seem to mind spending BIG $$$$ on the projects that are housed IN the garage.

We assume that because "they" want a garage "they" have techanical ability. Most times "they" dont have a clue to the questions much less the answers. We are quick to DISMISS instead of ASSIST. In our attempt to help, we stroke our own egos instead of pooling our collective wisdom. In offering our help we "experts" quickly become adversarial and argumentative and oftentimes lose site of the original issue/subject. Most often the best answer is not necessairly the perfect answer. Everything in life is a compromise. I can see why some board watchers do not want to participate. Just sayin"

Hmm, I guess this will be my second post in a little over a year. I come here and research, search and read. For the mostpart I don't get the impression that I have anything particularly worthwhile to add. So unless someone asks a question I feel I can speak directly to, I suppose I shouldn't bother. As for reposting what the locals feel are deadhorse subjects I find that there are often unanswered questions even after reading whole threads. And while things may be wrapped up tidy and all in the experianced minds POV the learner isn't quite there yet.

Sometimes I like seeing the same topic come up again and again because there's the possibility that new light is shed on the topic. Maybe not often, but I think if you've got a group of the same guys on here, there's the problem of "Groupthink". **** gets parroted as received wisdom and it's not always deserving as such. I like a diverse assortment: mechanics, engineers, machinists, sheet-metal workers, construction, lay people, whatever.

I've been on several other forums and this one is no worse than any others when it comes to beating a dead horse. Actually, it might be the best one I've been on. I wouldn't complain yet, because it could get a lot worse. Right now, this forum is still very helpful, informative and generally fun to be a part of.
