Hey guys. I bought a new truck and I need a new bed cover. I had the bakflip on my other truck. While it was nice and solid it was also very heavy to lift at times.

I think I want a roll up cover this time, but open to other options. What do you guys suggest? I see two basic kinds, soft vinyl or a somewhat ridged version. I don’t really have a budget, but I also don’t want a 1k electric roll up either. It’s going on an 8ft bed.

I have had Truxedo LoPro’s on my last two trucks. They were about $450. They have held up well and I would recommend them.

I got a Lomax but it is almost identical to the Bakflip. I think there is a roll up called the "Revolver"

My bakflip was ok for the first 10yrs. I think I got too old for it and it has become a pain to flip and open. The old bed was 5.5 and the new one is 8ft.

I have a Retrax powered cover on my 2011 Frontier have not had any issues with it, it is a little pricey.

I have had 2 Gaylord bed covers. The first one I still have and it is 32 years old (same as the truck) and neither ever gave me a problem. Nice covers, decent security, not terribly hard to remove if you need an open bed.

I got the China knockoff version of this. I love it. Everything stays bone dry.

I put a Retrax on my F350 and it looks and performs well. Even in our wet Florida thunderstorms it stays pretty dry. Like Fuelboat said, a little pricey but worth it to me.

I also have a Retrax on my new Ram, and it's great. Also in FL, and it stays mostly dry, even in recent tropical weather. I think an upgrade to the tubes that carry away the water would make it almost completely dry.

I just got a 350 coincidentally. That retrax is awesome, but pricey. Kinda threw a wrench in my plan to go cheap.

I bought the cheapest trifold I could find on Amazon. Tyger I think. It's actually great, better than the Lund I had on my last truck.

I too bought a Tyger for my 6' bed Equator and wasn't crazy about how it sits on top of the bed rails but functionally, it's been great allowing another 1"-1.5" of room to pack **** in. It keeps everything pretty dry but when sitting still, wind driven rain can get in, but oddly stays rather dry when moving. I bought it in 10/16 and noticed some of the stitching starting to fail last summer, it really looks rough now, to the point I don't think it could be repaired but it has a 10 year warranty and I'm going to see what can be done soon. The stupid expensive covers that take what is usually a tiny bed already, intrude on the cargo space and make it that much less useful defy logic.

Truxedo. Hands down. Keep your receipt for a lifetime, no hassle, they’ll replace any part of it that fails free of charge, warranty.

I have this on my work truck and it works very well. If the truck was mine and wasnt going to be replaced in 3 years I'd probably get something better but i love it for the price. Think it was about 200 for the short bed Chevy Colorado model.

When I purchased my 2007 Ford Ranger, it had a one piece hard plastic truck bed cover made by UnderCover already on it. I priced it today and see it goes for $919.00 plus tax for a 6 foot bed. These things are definitely not cheap! As far as usefulness goes, my truck doesn't haul much more than groceries and yard supplies, so it is fine. But I discovered that lots of things are taller than the sides of my truck, so I can't fully close the bed cover and end up tying it down. Taking it off is easy to do, but it really takes two people to do it. It is too large and heavy for one person to handle. As far as weather goes, it has no foam or rubber seals, but very little water gets into the bed. Leaks only occur if it is windy during a rainstorm. I live in California and the cover is black plastic, so in the summer the cover gets hot enough to fry an egg. It has a pressurized strut on each side, so it is easy to open and close. Overall, it suits my limited needs but honestly I think it is pretty over priced for a piece of plastic. I hope that helps.

Thanks everyone. So many different perspectives it makes deciding hard. I live that retrax, but not the price. Vinyl is lightweight and probably easy to use, my only reservation is durability. I guess since it’s not a full time work truck I can sacrifice stoutness for ease of use with the vinyl.

I am in construction and my hands and arms have some serious pain when trying to flip back my old cover. I couldn’t imagine that fight on an 8’ bed up that high on a 350.

Keep them coming in case I missed anything. Thank you!

Yea I agree with you. I usually lease or own like I'm leasing and move on every 3 years. I've always had tri-folds. Not only do you keep the space, if you need to remove it, it's off in <60 seconds.

You're right, they're not 100% water tight, but they're pretty damn good. I only see even fair amounts of water when I go through the car wash. This a design thing, none of the brands are any different.

2014 - first pickup - Extang Trifecta. This was by far the best and if I was going to own for a long time I'd probably go this route. With that said it's the only one that broke hinges on me. Quick latch in the back is super nice. But with the warranty they replaced them right away. ~$500

2017 - Lund Trifold - Garbage. Terrible fabric, got loose. Hinges were junk, latches were even worse. Constantly getting loose. ~$350

2020 - Tyger - By far the best value of the 3. Fabric and stretch is as good or better than the extang. No quick shot latches but they still hold firm and operate easily. ~$225

I loved the extang, but it's not twice as nice as the tyger. So that'll be the one I snag from here on out.

I put a Truxedo lo-pro on my F250 in 2007. The truck has lived outdoors until about 2 months ago. The cover is still in great shape. The elastic loops used to keep it rolled up at the front of the bed when open are no longer stretchy, but they still keep it rolled up.

I’d buy this model again without hesitation.

I have a solid fiberglass painted to match the truck on 2011 Tacoma. It has gas struts so easy to open. Spray silicone on the seals every other year. It wasn't cheap $1400 maybe but it is 100% dry and looks great. If I carried a lot of tall stuff it might not be the best solution but I have only had to remove it twice.

I got so sick and tired of people shopping in the bed of my last pickup truck, I switched to vans to keep my junk secure.

I have an American Roll cover from Truck covers USA. I've had mine for over 5 yrs. No issues thus far. My friend had a bak flip and it got destroyed by wind. He replaced it with the American roll cover. He liked it so much when he bought a new truck he pulled the cover off and installed it on his new truck.

I have the rigid roll-up from Truxedo, Sentry CT, and I'm happy with it. They say it's good for up to 400# snow load, added security from the plain vinyl, doesn't block all rear vision when totally rolled up, very low-profile. One year in with no issues, never had any water intrusion. Dust will get in through the tailgate if you're driving a lot in the dirt, but that would be true of any cover.

I’m a big fan of the Bakflip X4 rolling cover. I previously had a Bakflip VP on my last truck. Rolling the cover is much better than folding.

If you can prove you had a Bakflip (receipt, proof of purchase), contact Bak directly (I messaged via Facebook) and ask for direct pricing for return customers. The discount is worth it!

Anyone have the manual roll up type with the aluminum ribs in it for stiffness?

Had a Bakflip revolver for almost three years on my F150, the powder coat didn't hold up great, but they didn't warranty it so the truck had a new top when it left.

One other issue, was that water would build up in the in the winter as snow melted in the sun, and then freeze at night, and the locking bars would not want to open.

Other then those couple issues I really liked the cover, kept things clean and dry.

My Silverado had a Lund tri fold vinyl on it when I bought it back in 2014-2015 range. I hated that POS from day 1, so after a ton of searching, I settled on the Revolver X2 from Bak industries. I had experience with the Bak Flip on a pickup truck at the Fire Department, and really didn't love the design, but it was solid. I cannot overstate how awesome the Revolver X2 was. It was a solid cover that kept water out when it was closed, but in about 15 seconds I had full access to the bed of the truck. I sold that truck last year, and ended up with an extra $1000 on resale because of the cover. It was the exact cover that the buyer was planning to put on whatever he bought. I picked up a 2017 GMC Canyon All Terrain in June, and will be putting the Revolver on it as well. It's freaking awesome!
