Put a beer fridge out in the garage this summer, it is only partially insulated and no heat, things will freeze in there. Do I need to unplug the fridge and bring the stuff in the house or will the stuff in the fridge be okay?? Will it harm the fridge to leave it plugged in and running in a cold environment?? thanks-

I would think the fridge would only run if the interior temp is higher than a preset ammount, so if something is freezing inside it would not have to run.
Sorry, can't help with the 'will it freeze' question, but maybe the insulation of the fridge will help keep it from doing so?

Anything below 50-55 degrees, and the fridge doesn't work very well. The freezer will also start to defrost.

Unplug fridge for winter place beer in snow cabinet you made by piling snow against house by garage pedestrian door ( or window!) sparay a layer of water on it, let that freeze more snow, more water etc etc, then hollow out area for beer, now when you want a beer open the door and you are all set! Great project for the kids btw!

I imagine the "partially insulated" refers to the garage and not the fridge, otherwise the fridge wouldn't hold temp. :)

You probably already know that a fridge works by removing heat from the air in the box (and losing that heat through the exchanger coil, usually on the back) and not by pumping cool air into the box. If the temp in the box is down, the compressor just won't run. No problem there.

Sooo, the inside temp of the little box (fridge) shouldn't be overly affected by the temp of the big box it's in (garage) since the fridge is insulated... unless the temp doesn't go above freezing for long periods. In which case you'll be enjoying beersicles.

My $.02

Pour your beer into a large, open glass and set in the snowbank or freezer.
Let the beer get cold enough to turn to slush.
The ice is the water. Skim it off and drink the leftover.
It is the same as distilling but you are useing cold instead of heat.
BTW, this is a great way to see how much water they use to make "lite" beer.
You will get twice as much ice from a "lite" then from a normal.

My beer fridge has survived three years in our unheated garage in Canada. I unplug it in late fall, and I plug it back in early spring. Never had a single pop, beer, water or etc. explode and stuff stays ice cold year-round. Good enough for me

From looks of fridge, you have a booze problem; seek AAA help immediately:lol_hitti

I have a problem with beer in my fridge; if it is there, I am going to drink it all. After drinking all that booze, I am unable to complete the shop project I came to the shop to complete....

the beer fridge is the single most important piece of equipment in a garage, it is to be taken VERY seriously. this is not a place to "skimp", laugh, joke, or "cheap out". beer fridges come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. all are to be respected and revered. it has never been proven that beer goes "stale" (at least in my garage). but it can be too warm, and too cold(frozen), therefore the beer fridge is of utmost importance.i believe that it is wrong for a beer fridge to be empty, i think it causes damage to the fridge. and garage owner. the larger the capacity of your fridge, the faster your car goes, the steeper hill your jeep will climb, the better your sports car handles, etc. so....allways take the garage fridge seriously!!!

I wanted to make a beer fridge thread going.
Being that I'm new I think I'll just ask to see some
setups. Beer storage is all too often over looked
when talking about a garage
So if I may cut in...
Lets see some more set ups! :)

I know virtually nothing about electric, motors, cold duty use. We live in SW Ohio gets to zero at night often enough, but also has pesky habit of going up to as much as 50 60 degrees sometimes when it`s still supposed to be winter. We have a fairly well insulated garage, and have always left the beer fridge plugged in, just in case it warms up. It hasn`t seemed to hurt anything, the fridge is now going on 26 years old.

Sinical I like your stock, and also note you don`t publish the area in which ya live, is that to keep people from stopping by and chatting?? JK

right now there's a red ale experiment, and an India pale "lager" on tap with root beer, hard cider and smoked brown ale in bottles. oh yeah, theres a few buds, coors light and assorted others in there, but they just seem to be aging.

I can't unplug my beer fridge. The weather is too unpredictable. One day its 30 and snowing, the next three its 75, the next its in the single digits.

And it is very true, by the way, that a well stocked beer fridge makes the car go faster!

I find that I can get more help in my garage by offering some beer rather than $20.

I'm in the process of building a detached 24X36 garage now. The bathroom area will be heated all winter but the actual garage area will only be heated when I'm working on a project or something. I decided to go with the Gladiator Garageworks Fridge because it's specifically designed for garage use. It was a little more up front, but for me, it was worth the peace of mind. I have it in the attached garage now while the detached it being finished and it's close to the garage doo and no issues so far.

I have only used garage sale fridges in garages that would sometimes get below freezing for days.
I never unpluged them. If it is cold they just don't turn on.
I never froze any beer or even soda pop. Sometimes a little "slush" but never frozen.

I live in Northern Illinois, where in the winter temps can be sub zero. Temps that cold don't allow the freezer to defrost, which makes it useless anyways. I unplug it when temps consistantly are below freezing and bring the beer inside. Beer freezes at about 25 degrees whether the fridge is on or off.

I use my cheap beer fridge as a condenser for my compressor. I punched a 1" hole on both sides near the bottom, placed a coiled copper tube on the bottom inside of my beer fridge, connected the high side to incoming air, and low side to outgoing air. I placed drain valve just outside the fridge before the pipe goes up. I also used that expanding foam to insulate my holes in the fridge. Works great, mind you this is a $30 fridge from a garage sale; I wouldn't do this to a new one.

I am 2 miles from the Cheddar Curtin.
As you know it has been a bit chilly up here foe a while.
I just poured me a beer last night from a 12 pack that had been out there for over a week. No problems.
(Note that I don’t drink “lite” anything. Too much water.)
While I was out there I checked the pop and Snapple. I didn’t see any ice.
To each his own. If you want to play it safe, who am I to say otherwise.
I am just reporting I have had no problems leaving it plugged in and full in an unheated garage.

Sinical- All that beer, and no Yuengling? :(

The fridge in my house (the only one I have) tends to be a "beer fridge". Being single, and not home much, I don't keep a lot of food around. But beer.... oh yes, have to have that.

yuengling rocks!! i always bring some home when i go east.

just remember the beer fridge doesn't have to be Fancy, it's the content that counts! they should, however, be covered in stickers, and other assorted junk, or custom painted. my garage is heated (as all garages should be) so freezing up is not a problem. plus beer should not be around long enough to freeze, it should be consumed ASAP!!!!:bounce:
