Beer keg grill?

Hey Friends... I have an aluminum half keg that was never returned and the deposit slip was lost years ago. I tried returning it with no luck... so, my question:

Has anyone ever cut one of these things in half and fitted it as a BBQ grille? I have all the tools capable of doing it, but this would be my first one. I'd love to see some pictures for ideas before I put it under the knife (or saw, grinder, file, etc... haha).

Are you sure it's aluminum? Thin walled aluminum won't make a very good grill. The aluminum has a low melting point and will warp ect when it gets really hot.

The keg may be stainless steel. Many keg grills have been made out of stainless and work fine.

It's almost surely stainless, a lot of them look aluminum but most/all of them are ss. Is it a half barrel (ie full sized keg) or quarter? I've made most of my brewing equipment out of discarded kegs, a grill would be awesome. Go for it!

well ya know... I just assummed it was aluminum. It is the standard half keg that we area all acustomed to from those college keg parties. If its stainless.... even better. I'm still waiting for some pictures though ;)

Try this

google Beerkeg grill

click the Images of Beer keg Grills, They have some cool ones there.

smart ***... I already did that.

But most of the members of this site like to show off, I was giving them a chance. Plus, I was hoping to get some insight to problems and things they would do differently.

I guess there is always at least one in every crowd. :lol_hitti

I've cut open several kegs. It's best done with a plasma cutter.

You'll go deaf trying it by other means.
humm... well I don't have a plasma cutter, yet (haha). I'm hoping that with some ear protection I can accomplish it with either the grinder or a saw.

I use mine for holding up the front of my car trailer. :)
This just made me laugh. I was thinking that after I finish the grill I may attach it to the tongue of my trailer... it would be a great spot for tailgating and camping.

If its aluminum, forget it.

It is PROBABLY stainless, which is good to go.

Draw the lines and cut slow.

Don't tell my Dad this... Oh wait a minute.. Dad has passed away.. But his aluminum keg grill still lives on and I have it... I'll take some pictures of it the next time I'm home and post here...

It worked very well for Dad and he had some pretty good batches of coals going in it...
