Gentlemen

Awesome job on these restorations! Great to see these pieces put back to better then new condition and being used again! I don't think most people realize the time and effort put into bringing these pieces back to life

That is antique silver powder coat. Here is a later pic. I'm still waiting on the covers and the pedestal they are going to do it a darker gray

I just stumbled across this thread and spent the last two hours wiping the drool off my chin. Don, this floor jack is worthy of a place on a pedestal at the Indy 500 museum! Inspirational!

I spend most of my GJ time on the Garage Sale threads posting my acquisitions and sometimes my restorations. You folks are out of my league, but I plan on implementing your techniques on future work and may go back and rework some things when I finish my dual grinder stand and outfit it with buffing wheels. I'm currently polishing up the semi truck brake drum I'm using as a base. It's shining up but no where near the mirror finish I've seen on some of the projects here.

Here are a couple of things I've worked on in the past:

A screw jack from the Illinois Iron & Bolt Company. The second pic is after the vinegar bath.

Nothing more than Rust-Oleum Flat Black. The lettering is Krylon Champagne Nouveau Satin left over from my CM Pre-Block grinder resto.

GREAT WORK GUYS!!

Angry Beaver: i've wanted to use Por15 and heard some of the old guys say they buy only what they want to use for one project cause they could never get the can open again. THANKS FOR THE TIP cause I do like buying in volume since i've got a ton of old stuff that is rusty and would look better with paint than BLO.

carry on and keep posting those before and after pics cause it's inspirational!!

I have been working on some pipe wrenches that have been in an old box for 25 years. Time to get things moving957f83127d935eb1f5e9843a1b7a7fb7.jpg12018f6ffc2aea6c89d8a94dc5e6f234.jpg2dfad9f6dae30d1cb5dd76ebf680f208.jpg4f78de2b85b843804fda72b6348b71e7.jpgd07cc8fd2126e16140cc32317e93aa83.jpgd4c56b72b3d0da06b9163d67500e7c79.jpg

Thanks! Nice job on that wrench! You might think about lightly buffing the paint off the high points of the knurling to set it off. Or, if you use it, it will naturally wear away...

However, if anybody knows how to clean up the white on the handles, I'm all ears. They are not supposed to be dingy tan, and it seems the guys on the chainsaw forums haven't found the secret yet either.

i know there were a couple other suggestions, but my first thought was a restoration of a video game syste. I saw a while back. It may have been this website http://www.retrofixes.com/2013/10/how-to-clean-whiten-yellowed-plastics.html or this one https://www.howtogeek.com/196687/ask-htg-why-do-old-computers-and-game-consoles-turn-yellow/

TJ: i love the vise and I bet your dad will too. the extra mustang bling is nice, but is the 289 just taped on for the pictures or does it just get removed when using the vise?

Just a quick update on my dual grinder stand progress. I covered the journals in grease before dumping the whole crankshaft in vinegar. I was a little concerned about the vinegar eating away the smooth finish on the journals so I only left it in the bath for 14 hours. It didn't eat through the grease but the short soak time didn't do much for the rust either. Don't bother with the grease trick--definitely too much trouble.

DryFit.jpgAnti-Vinegar Grease Coating.jpg

I decided to rinse, dry it off and attack it with the angle grinder staring with a 40 grit flapwheel. It's really a PITA to hit all the surfaces of the counterweights--and of course, even a 7" flapwheel doesn't reach everywhere.

This is after two days work...

Crankshaft after 40grit Flapwheel.jpg

I'll try working through 60 and 80 grit tomorrow and then see if I feel like going further...oh, my aching back!

Citric acid bath or navel jelly works better for me than vinegar. Smells better too.

Believe me, I looked for the good old-time Naval Jelly but all I could come up with was Rust-oleum Rust Dissolver Jelly. The two pictures above are AFTER using that ****. It actually rusted the metal--and I'm not talking about flash rust either. Here is a pic of what the crankshaft looked like before using the rust dissolver.

How cool! Did you convert it yourself or was it always a motor-bike? What's the long appendage coming out of the front of the engine?
