Not done , waiting on an Amazon delivery. Not sure if I'm where I'm supposed to be before I hit with those buffing wheels (or whatever you call them).

What ever you do, please do pics and document the work. I have a twin I need to restore. I'll be watching.

That's awesome ! Where are you at with it ? I won this last year at an auction two miles from Gramma's house, still not clear on the serial numbers. Got a pic of yours ? I'd like to see it.

Mine is going to be a winter project. I have had it for several years and just tried to keep it running as a backup. Now is the time to rebuild. I will do photos of the progress.

In addition to the rear axles, my '87 Corvette has an aluminum driveshaft so when I finished replacing the joints I gave it a quick buff.

The C4 Corvette has an unusual transmission mount. It's aluminum and holds up the transmission tailshaft. Unlike most cars, with a transmission mount on a crossmember that goes across the frame, these cars have the mount running the length of the car from the differential to the transmission. It' over three feet (1 meter) long. A little buffing brightened it up.

If you agree with my wife that there's something wrong with me, I don't blame you. In my defense, I decided not to polish the 700R4 transmission. I did decide to change the transmission fluid and since the stock steel pan doesn't have a drain plug I thought of adding one. Then I found an aluminum pan that comes with a plug, is a little deeper and it's already nicely polished. I know it's cheating but hey, I'm happy to pay someone for a little bling. Oh, it also comes with stainless allen bolts to match the extra thickness on the flange.

Vette parts are looking tasty!

What box is that behind the transmission support? I have a Knight that I can't remember where I got it from and look identical to yours.

Bigblockyeti, thank you. Before I retired I didn't have time but I'm in my 26th year of FREEDOM so I can waste time on lots of stuff.

That box is a CSPS 42" 19-drawer set from Costco. I kept waiting for it to go on sale and one day the display was gone. I asked at the desk and they found it in back, scheduled to be shipped back to the supplier. I told them I'd buy it and when they said the supplier was giving them the sticker price, I forked over $692.24 on September 23, 2005. Now they have a similar Trinity for $1,199.99 (guess they think we'd walk away if it was $1,200).

The closest Costco to me (when I lived in OH) opened 12/10/02 and it would have been 5 minutes away vs. 25 minutes for Sam's Club. I would have bought my box pretty shortly there after for under $700 after tax and it still looked like new when I started at the Honda MC shop in '04. I recently saw a used one far more beat up than mine for $900. I should have bought a few if they're appreciating.

Not exactly polishing, but definitely a before and after. I just finished up the mammoth Rockwell/Bux magnetic drill I bought a few weeks ago from a local industrial surplus seller.

Before, with bent handles, faulty wiring, and a thick layer of gunk, swarf and cutting fluid,

And after, with fresh cordage, brushes and bearings,

Now, to get it dirty again drilling holes in stuff...

That Rockwell mag drill looks great all gussied up!

I finally found another 3450 rpm motor to accept my buffing spindle so of course I immediately had to try it out. My old cotton rag wheel didn't fly apart on me so that was a minor win. I grabbed some red rouge and the blade cover from my recently acquired BK10 to practice on, all the while remembering 99% of the parts from this thing are total unobtainium. It really cleaned it more than polishing as you can see from the before and after pictures but at any rate it does look a little better. I don't know if the cartouches are painted black or if it's japanning but it seemed to drag a little out and smear it around making a mess.

For those polishing aluminum, what wheel and speed are you running and what compound(s) are you using?

I use a Delta buffer running at 3450 rpm with sewn buffs, one loaded with brown tripoli, the other with green chrome oxide. I find that pulling the tool apart and cleaning the castings with mag ( not aluminum) wheel cleaner and a brass brush helps lighten the castings as it removes the dirt, making less work at the buffer itself.
The cartouches are filled with paint, and need scrubbed out after buffing since they collect gunk so badly.

Piece of track. I feel I'm missing a step or not taking one far enough.

400 then 800 then 1200, and so on.
I know people that go to 2000 grit.
The guy I know that restores trim for vehicles sands it six times with progressively fine paper each time

Sent from my SM-A102U using The Garage Journal mobile app

From what you listed, I've got a big jump between 2nd and 3rd step. I'll adjust that and I rough it in with 80 grit , prolly try and tone that down a bit too.

Paid a visit to the scrap yard today. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy.
