Before starting new threads, could searching be required?

I feel that I am seeing sooooooooo many repeat threads lately. I am also a culprit, but usually when the thread is really old and I wanted to get a new one started. What if before starting a new thread it was required to complete a search? For example, say I wanted to start a thread about what I should use for compressor airlines. I would enter my thread title "what should I use for compressor airlines?" then it would automatically search the GJ and then ask me if I found my answer or do I still want to start a new thread. Another way would be maybe to have the search box come up before you can actually post the new thread. I am sure it is more complicated than I think, but I know it could be done. What do you think?

I find searching to be unproductive. I think that it is related to my selection of search words. Either I get NO results, or I get THOUSANDS. I usually try to search again and refine my search terms, but generally, the results of my successive searches duplicate my first one.

Sounds like a good way to exclude responses from new members, shield us from new technology and ideas, and eliminate time-sensitive responses.

I typically search before I start a thread,but I don't think it should be a requirement.

Here's a tip to help you search.

Google allows you to direct your search to a specific site. So instead of using the forum search engine I will use Google. Just enter "search string" site:garagejournal.com

I agree the search function leaves alot to be desired. The whole point of having a discussion forum is to discuss things. Otherwise it's just a database and there would be no need to allow posting any new stuff. What annoys me is those guys who constantly post "do a search" without offering any answers to the question. We were all new once. Cut the newbies some slack and try to be helpful.

I don't see that "do a search" so much these days. Maybe I'm just not clicking on common theme threads.

I actually find searching to be easy if you know the Boolean techniques. (That's searchable.) When I need an answer now, I get a nice cross reference of several forums and sites.

I don't look at the GJ as an encyclopedia but rather my home forum and as one of my better forms of current info, entertainment and good subject matter to learn from.

But when you are looking for answers to specific questions you need to broaden your horizons.
