Beginner welder question..

Ok, so I'm learning to weld. I'm using a Hobart Handler 187.

So far my biggest issue is having the wire getting bunched up in the case and not feeding correctly.

Can someone help me with what I may be doing wrong?

Sure you've got the right size tip for the size wire you're using?

I try and get stretch the cord out as straight as possible while welding so the wire feeds through better with no kinks or turns. Could be the tip needs changing as well.

Make sure you are using the correct grove in the roller guides and as noted, check your tip size. If you bought the welder used, you might need a new liner.

Make sure the reel feeds clockwise and increase the tension on the reel/spool

possibly not enough "tension" on the wire feed spool (there should be a spring that is adjustable on the spool side) that leaves enough tension in the wire so that once you lift off the gun switch, the spool should not continue to rotate.

One way to check your liner condition is to fully pull your wire back out of the liner, and carefully feed it back through under power (making sure you did not leave a kinked feed start). The feed roll should rotate evenly and smoothly while the wire is going through the jacket. (also make sure the tip is not attached to the end of the gun as it could jam as it tries to exit the jacket.)

I picked up the welder new, it feeds into the liner just fine. I think I need to adjust my tension.

Skyking - did you build the Pitts? I've got an RV-6 and am heading to Stillwater next weekend to pick up an Airbike.
