I clearly state in all my CL sales -
"Contact me via email ONLY. No text, no phone calls".
More than half the replies state "Can I have your phone number for directions?".
One guy I replied to, I said "If I'm available, I'm available via email. I check every four minutes. If you would like to come look at it [blah blah]" He replied -
""If you want to sell it you WILL give me your phone number""
It was tempting to give him the number of the local gay bath house or the SWAT team emergency line. But I simply told him "Have a nice day".

I have an excuse for the dude not returning your email. This just happened to me. I had to put my project truck up for sale for financial reasons. It was a hard decision for me to do it. When I told my wife and daughter that it was listed they were not happy with me. They pleaded with me not to sell it. They were sure that things would work out and the truck didn't need to be sold. I was surprised at the lack of interest in my truck on craigslist. I checked the email regularly and nothing! One day I deleted an email and went into the trash folder to retrieve it. That's when I noticed that somebody was trashing every email about my truck before I could see it. Lucky for them it was the same day that things did work out and I no longer needed to sell my truck. I never said a word to either of them about it. It made me feel good that they didn't want to see me loose my project truck and they had faith in us being able to turn our finances around without me giving up my prized possession. I did however enjoy messing with them for a few days. Usually I would use the home computer around their needs for it, but since the ball was in my court now I couldn't resist. I would walk through the door and say "I need to use computer to check for emails about my truck! That thing has got to go and if I get even one offer on it no matter what it is I'm selling it!" Then listen to both of them make up excuses why I shouldn't use the computer until one of them did.
I couldn't be mad at them for what they did. All's fair in love and war right?

The real jokers are the ones that post a phone number and then state in all bold letters to text them, no calls, just text. Seriously? You want to sell your ****, but not bad enough to actually pick up the phone when it beeps? Unless it's a text, in which case you're happy to pick it up and screw around texting me back instead of just talking to me? What planet are these people on???

He wouldn't give me a number to call and after a number of weeks and e-mails I sent one last e-mail wanting to pick the items up. A-hole said he sold them to someone else. Maybe because like someone stated they were cheap.

well i would like too e mail them , but my computer wont send them , my computer junk when come too sending people with e mail, so i just scan for phone numbers and hope for the best, right now i got ad on for a 9 inch saw blade ,for my miter saw , very hard too find, its about a 1968 and very good shape , it came out the frame shop here in the mall , when they made wood picture frame's, it has a tiny bed of of 2 inch on it and i can rip a 2/4 no problem when blade was sharp, and i bought for $15.00, o sorry i got too wondering off topic , but i'll someday i'll find a blade for it on craiglist

Then again, it was a $700 Bosch table saw that was new in the box for $300. Maybe it was hot? I did notice that the place was very popular with the police to fuel up.
That was the first sketchy incident I had and I thank myself for that. I will now, whenever possible, go to meet someone at a Gas Station in front of a security camera. Think about it, a thief can pick a place to meet and take your money knowing that you were bringing $*** in cash. Buyer beware.

I saw the post immediately and sent an email showing interest. Nothing back. Sent a similar email to them 2 days later. Nothing. Fast forward 2 months and I get a call about the lift. I went and looked at it the next day and took it home that weekend. Lesson learned? You just never know.

Similar thing happened to me last week. Wanted to buy a Roomba and saw an ad. Called, left a voicemail. Nothing. Followed up with an email next day. Nothing. Saw another listing from another seller, had that Roomba in hand within 4 hours. Still haven't heard back from the first "seller". But, you guessed it, their add is still up. Idiots.
It's frustrating when it's a rare piece you really want/need. In my case, I could get a Roomba retail anywhere and CL had a fair selection of used ones, too, so I found a different to buy in pretty short order once I realized the first seller was a flake.
There are three items in different adds by the same poster. Been trying to get an answer since 5:30 am Friday morning. I want to buy them all. Think they would check thier email at least once daily?

I wish the would put a definition in the free section for "Curb alert". I've put up ads for this recently and the concept is great. I want to get rid of something, it's not worth enough to sell and I don't want the hassle but I know someone can use it. I put up a "Curb alert" ad, with a picture and my address, put the item at the curb and I'm done. Period end of story. If you want it come and get it, IT'S FREE. Don't email me and ask if it's still available, don't ask for more information on it. IT'S AT THE CURB. I must have received 10 emails about a kids soccer net made from PVC. You see the picture. Come and get it. One guy even slipped his business card under my door when I was out. If it's not at the curb then someone beat you to it.

Every ad is different, like most things, the more you use it the more you understand how to work with its quirks. I love craigslist (as well as ebay for certain items). I feel the OP's pain on no response, but stick with it. Most of those can be really good deals. I had one go two weeks before they got back to me, I own the truck and am driving it. I also paid half what they were asking due to so many other people giving up. There is nowhere else to get the kind of exposure for no dollars. If you have a real rare item, take it to ebay or an auction. For all the lazy sellers, just take it to the pawn shop and get the lazy price so I can go get myself a good deal!

My first Cl purchase was awesome. Went to HomeDepot.com looking for a 20" aluminum extension ladder. I was about to hit submit order and decided to check CL.
There it was on the first page under general. 20" aluminum extension ladder. Used once and did not have room to store it. Yeah right I thought but the pic looked good and in the pci I could see if was a nice brick home. Emailed him Sunday evening asking if it was still available. 7:45 this morning he replied. 8:45, I was leaving his house with a practically brand new ladder for $50.00.

I have been sending emails to Craigslist sellers i figure about 50% ever get back to me so what i do now is make an offer usually in my favor and if they want to call me and call me an ******* for making that low offer oh well at least i have them on the phone and can make reasonable offers. So when i respond to someones i always leave phone number
There was a guy selling a snowmobile an hour away from me for a stupid low price. I emailed and got no response. I wrote in the subject line an amount of money I would be willing to offer if it was good. Well, it was $50 over what he was asking. I was the first he called and I bought it. Sold it the next day for an extra quick $600.00 to a dealer.

Items were posted late Thurs night around 10:45 pm with email contact only and no phone number to call. 3 items in seperate adds. I emailed at 5:15 am. about all three items. Said I would buy them. The deal was good enough I wouldn't even ask for a better price. Gave my phone number and name in first email along with subsequent emails. Told him he could call or text anytime. Also told him I was a real person not a scam program. No answer to any of the emails on any of the items.

Though remotely possible, the items may have been sold already. (it happens!) I always do respond to inquires with a 'sorry but it sold' but I know a lot of people who use a disposable email account and just don't even check it after the item is sold.

This isn't directed at you, but I just don't get this, having bought and sold on CL. Unless someone is just a complete retard, how is this possible? They had the technical ability to POST the ad. How f'ing hard is it to delete the ad when the item sold, even if they used a throwaway email? I don't delete my ads until they're sold, but as the guy/girl is driving off with my item and I have cash in hand, I either jump on the computer or get on my phone and delete the ad. Takes all of 30 seconds. If I didn't have a phone or computer nearby, I'd at least delete the ad when I got back home, to the library, school computer lab, or wherever it was that I posted the ad from. And if I did get any emails between the time I sold the item and managed to delete the listing, I'd have the decency to shoot back a courtesy email, even if it's literally just two words: Sorry sold.
I mean, how busy do I have to be to not do someone a solid by just telling them something is gone?
I guess this whole thing touches a nerve with me because it happens to me about 75% of the time I'm trying to buy something. Really makes me hate people.
Once, I tried to buy a vintage jack (see my sig, I'm still looking ), and the listing was a month old. Chick tells me, "Sorry, I sold this about a month ago." Fine, I appreciate her getting back to me. But, great baby jeebus, she sold it a MONTH ago and couldn't be arsed to take the ad down in all that time? Really? Ugh.Rant over. Sorry.

I don't like it either, but I've been in similar situations when selling. List something cheap and you get dozens of emails, and sell it to the first person who shows up with money. I'm not going to spend too much time answering all the emails after that. I do try and pull the ad as soon as possible, but I'm not going to rush to a computer if I'm busy with something else.
You also have to remember that there are a lot of people out there yet that aren't really computer savvy, and have had their ads placed by friends. My father is in this category, and I don't think he get's the idea that it's not like the paper, where once it's out there, you're done.
I try not to get too worked up over CL. If I want something I email or call, and if I don't hear back I figure it's gone. Why expect more from a free service?

Some CL sellers are turds. No doubt about it. They don't delete when sold. They don't reply and say "Sorry, it sold". Some may not understand the process. They may think it's like eBay and will be taken off or expire. But it's not the fault of CL. It's just like a kiosk with 3x5 cards and flyers that people used to tack up half a century ago. The old and sold one's may or may not get taken down.
If you think SELLERS can be turds, consider some of the FREE listings.
"Free 2x4 lumber" - read further and it's the framing of a condemned and scorpion infested garage. You'll need to tear it down, haul off the debris, clean up the site etc - BUT you can have the 2x4s.
Fencing, palm trees, cinder blocks, plumbing pipe - all regularly have similar free ads. You can have the stuff but you'll have to do the demo, get permits, bring heavy equipment etc to get it.
Another popular one is "Free widget on the curb. If the ad is posted it's still there. Must be picked up by 6pm today" read further and learn that they are 50 miles out of town, they won't hold it for you and it's 4:30 pm when they posted it.
No reason to get worked up over it all. CL is a **** shoot and it's free. Someone else might get it before you do. It's really not a whole lot different than a lot of brick and mortar sellers. The ad says "Widget On Sale" but you get there and they don't have the widget. They'll call other stores for you and maybe if you drive another 30 miles you can pick it up at the other store. They typically have the floor model on display but they won't sell you that. That's pretty "turdy" IMO.
I guess there's a limited supply of widgets, and an abundance of turds, both commercial and pvt sales.

I think that it has also revealed the fact that we have way too many illiterate people in this country, and many of them are now armed with a computer, and are selling things online. Many of them should have stayed low-tech, managing their bumper stickers and collecting tin foil for their alien protection hats.
Add that to the attention deficit disorder that seems to be the norm nowadays, with ads posted but unattended, and you have a perfect storm of frustration for online buyers.

One other thought, is that new bees on Craigslist may not realize that many items have a fast response time. Unlike newspaper advertisements, which take days and are slow, things on the Internet move at almost the speed of light!

Just because it is important to you to buy, doesn't mean the seller feels the need to sell it within hours.
I sell infrequently on Kijiji (similar to Craig's list). I often don't check for responses for a day (or more) after I post. Too many things going on in life, and selling what ever I have posted, falls behind most of it. It's also why I don't post my phone number. I don't want to be bothered with calls (I will give out to buyers if their emails sound like someone I'm interested in selling to).
I treat buying from Kijiji kind of like a lottery ticket. If it looks interesting I try to buy it, but never get excited or assume it's mine till I have it in hand. If I really need it, I'll buy retail.
Didn't expect it in hours. Just wanted to be first in line. He posted it last Thursday. Still haven't heard from him. I send 1 email a day asking about it. I figure if it's still posted, it's still for sale. Maybe he will be nice, send me an email and at least say..Hey *******! it's sold! And I can't afford the item at retail, it's almost $2000. I clear my sold items as soon as I have cash in hand. I reply to ALL inquiries, even the stupid ones asking for info posted with the item. Even the ones that ask if I want to trade when the add clearly says cash only no trades. Ahhhh, but if only the world were perfect, I'd still be an *******......
