Nice find, LZ! 
The letters are chronological, from A to F (modern), but we Bell System collectors have never located a detailed documented timeline, with start dates and cutoff dates, LZ. We have made some very good derivations and empirical guesses on the Bell System thread. But it lacks detail. A was the very earliest, obviously. B is definitely also pre-WWII. C gets trickier. I have C items that have no zip code or area code. But whether they are early enough to be 40s is fuzzy. There is a decent reference online that has some period documents and I may be able to use some of the nomenclature on the roll-up to do some matching. I have a few of the items to fill that and maybe some extras if you're interested. I will say that we have noted many times how Bell mimicked the Army, explicitly the Signal Corps. From CJ-2's with pioneer kits to toolkits. The rollup looks military. Might lend credence to late 40s. I will dig a little deeper.
