Finally closed on the new house, a week ago. As it always goes when first moving, the garage is chock full of stuff. Most of it isn't tools. The ceiling is low, as is the trend in this area, but this time I don't have a center support beam that's ready to smack me in the head if I'm not careful. 20230113_150209.jpg20230113_150216.jpg20230113_150205.jpg

There was so much piled up when we purchased, I didn't know there was a sump in the garage, right where the workbench will be. I'm still thinking of how to handle that, maybe put a grate over it that will meet up with the flooring. Wire it permanently, run the hose better.. future things.

And the reason it's the below deck.

20230122_140949.jpg

I dig it, might look into directing run-off from the deck to the sides of the garage, will make a nice place to park the bikes should I be using the garage.

About the only thing I've managed since, replaced all the rollers for the garage door, adjusted and lubed. It's really a nice door and I'm happy to not need to replace it.

Needs to have the stuff Cleaned out, walls painted, the mess of wires taken care of and such. Then comes the fun stuff. I have a utility room adjacent to the garage where the electric is, will make wiring the garage itself cake. Paint the walls and plan out the rest. ***** to be starting over but any garage work is good work right?

Blank slate!

Before you really start using it as a garage, think about installing a fire rated door to the basement and installed 5/8 Type X drywall to isolate the house from the garage.

Lots of potential.

The door is a must. For the ceiling I was pandering about using aluminum soffit. I have to drop the ceiling down about 2" anyway to clear a bunch of heat pipes, might save me just a bit of room that way.

Not really anything on the garage, except looking up different sump pump basins. I'm thinking I'll set one in properly come spring/summer when I have a spare weekend, doesn't look terribly hard.

Not that I haven't been busy this weekend. The original owners took out the closets separating two rooms and made it one huge room. We have kids that need that wall back...

Still at it, also added a project car to the mix. 2003 outback that will serve as a spare/hauler. I need to pick up a 5x8 trailer and I'm set there. The two rooms are painted, floors down. Pantry is done, started tearing apart the office in the basement and promptly had to switch gears to chase a badly wired outlet that shut down the refrigerator.

If I wasn't tired enough, I took advantage of the warm day and borrowed a leaf blower. By the time I moved all the leaves from the front all the way around the back I have a pile the size of a small car. On another warm day I'll blow it off into the buffer woods. Been here a month and been near non- stop. One day I'll get to working on the garage.

Sorry to say, not much garage content yet. It'll come, one day. Much of the last few weeks has been doing kids birthday parties, resurfacing the grill (Blackstone, easy job), and reclaiming our yard/gardens. This place is like the secret garden, all the clean stone was completely covered by that green vine stuff, I had zero idea any of the stone patio or pathway was there. Keep following the pathway to the shed (another surprise when leaf blowing tore the moss off it) and it goes behind the shed to a little parcel completely covered by the vine stuff.. and even more paths and planters and such. The previous owner put a ton of work into this place, it's been a blast finding everything he's done.20230405_115754.jpg

Let's see about updating. Summer has been a blast, I've been everywhere from laconia bike rally up to Mt washington, nently's saloon, camping through torrential downpours, concerts... life is good. Garage will come in time. It seems I've spent more time filling it up than working on it of late, but isn't that how it goes.

Screenshot_20230616_072655_Chrome.jpg
Guy on Mt Washington has a nice little gig, takes pictures and doest them up nice. I'll have to get it blown up and framed for garage art one day.

709141556.jpg
My brother rode up to laconia with pops and I some years back. Says he is going to come back for the 100th year anniversary when he's a doctor and buy a bike. Well, he is a doctor, but still a resident. Lower pay for sure. He joined me at the rally, figured this wasn't the time. We sat on a bunch of bikes, the sales people start talking dollars, broski asks if they'll give us a deal if I buy one too. Wouldn't you know it, they sucked me in. Never thought I'd be a harley owner but this thing is a blast to ride.

20230812_174911.jpg
And then the mistress. I've barely found time to properly polish the paint this year. Got the lip kit installed and just the other day finished blacking out the chrome trim on the doors. Guy turned sideways into me a month ago. Big crunch and I figured the whole quarter panel was gone. Lucky, the wheel tried to eat his step bar on the side, just some rubber afterwards that rubbed right off.
20230524_094732.jpg
And the real kicker. The van and driver belong to a wheel refurbishing company. I figured I'd let karma work it's magic this time round. They picked up the wheel after I took it off and had it back good as new the next day. Color is the slightest bit off, I can live with that for nobody being worse for wear.

Cool updates. I grew up on the other side of the river from you and am about to close on a new (to me) home over in Hopewell Junction.

I'll keep an eye out for the VRS3CHS 😅

was a joke at the time. A buddy went and got himself a silly plate, so I did too. Congrats on the new home, hopefully on the new garage as well? Important things, after all.

My Evo used to wear an I❤️NY plate with the tag XR4TED. When I transfer from CT back to NY I'll have to think of something new.

A humble 1-car in the new place, but with plans to build a detached structure right away for all the toys. I plan to start a thread once I officially close on the new property.

A 1 car is all I've ever had. This one is slightly smaller than the previous, but will be fine for now. Building prices are so expensive, and mortgage.. lordy.. I really don't know what I'm going to end up with, maybe a 15x20 shed, might even see if the town will let me plop a 2 floor shed where I want it. Everything is just so expensive these days.

I envy what my pops got. Really big 2 car with a full attic storage attached, put a huge shed right next to it. Plenty of space for all the things.

And as requested, a few pictures of my bacon.

The frame at least is a Motobecane I purchased on a whim years ago. There are a few parts from my grandfather's schwinn le-tour and my great grandfathers Peugeot le-mans I think it was. It's small on me, hence the stem. While not terribly comfortable, I've had it out for a 40 mile ride before and it's just fine for a couple hour wander.

I love the bars. Bar end shifters are indexed and work nicely with the current setup, less guess work that way. If anything, I'd love to switch out the 28 rear for maybe a 32 tooth, the front is a 40 already. The men of past certainly has more gusto than I do, it's a bear up steep hills.

Appreciate it. Going off your brake theme, little worrisome going down one of the monster hills on that 40 mile ride. It managed alright but will get pads at some point.

alright, let’s get this started…
IMG_3006.jpeg
Spraying a little sealer on that bottom edge as that used to be where moisture would gather. I’ve since fixed the situation, better safe than sorry I never did. I’ve settled on what I’m going to do for the ceiling, corrugated roofing it is. Next up, I’m going to use some dry lock on the bottom edge of the wall to be extra sure, strip the rest of the wall, repair, good paint, move to the next. Wake me up when it’s over.

I did manage to paint most of the garage. I’ll give the color border a shot once I have it all set and better lighting - in the works
IMG_3110.jpeg
Promise, it’s not near as messy as it looks there.

When going through all the garage stuff and sorting what to keep and what to trash, I got rid of a lot of my unused detailing stuff. Some of which was 20years old, possibly more. I’ve started putting together a cart (seen bottom right in the above pic) of all the detailing things and purchased some new stuff to start a new process. Foam blaster, new microfiber clothes, new chemicals, all sorts of good stuff. Put it to use today, it was enjoyable.
IMG_3160.jpeg

Next up is to finish installing all 8 canless LED lights and wire them up. Little concrete work, running emt, little more paint, and it’s ready for flooring.

Looking great!

Have you considered enclosing the whole area under the deck to create more garage? Seems like you'd more than double your available space!

I have, and I may yet put up a sort of slat wall on both sides. The issue I’ll have to deal with there is the deck above dripping below. I have an idea of putting some corrugated roofing between the joists to direct the water forwards of that space, a project for another time.

I have the sump basin, it’s a touch bigger than what’s there already but it’s ready to go in likely tomorrow.

A week or two ago I decided I was well enough through with pushing our roughly .5 acre with my little walk behind. Takes the better part of an hour and a half to do it. Talked it over with the better half. As much as I hate spending more money on yard equipment, it will save me time which pays off.

Browsed Facebook and came across a Gravely 34”, good owner, good price.

IMG_3272.jpeg
She cleaned up well. Has about 125 hours on it from what I can tell. Starts first pull, cuts like nobody’s business. I’d have to admit, it’s a bit intimidating a machine.

Lawn mowed, wacked (wacker is acting up, I don’t want to take that carb apart) started taking everything out of the shed. Mice got into it and I need to chase them out before taking a look at the walls. Saw a bunch and took the leaf blower to the insides, that seems to have scared them pretty good.

To be continued tomorrow…

Busy day today. Finished up organizing in the shed. I’ll be building a back shelf for it when I take apart the bench in the garage, but for now everything has a place.

Got busy with the sump basin. Little chipping, lots of digging. The garbage can holding the debris was the original. I’m not sure I’ll have a use for it after all this. The big box stores didn’t have filter fabric, at least not that I could see. I’ll be waiting on that, need to get a paver that is suitable for the bottom as well.

IMG_3286.jpeg
IMG_3287.jpeg

Got a little painting done with the spare time left this evening. I tried taping first, horrible failure that. I’ve got a mini roller that I’ve been carefully getting to the edge of the blocks. Little bit of touch up at some point and it will be good enough. I’m still not looking forward to the electrical, the lights will make this look great.

The garage has half the lights wired, has a couple outlets, and now has a small workbench (if you could call it that).

IMG_3634.jpeg

The garage might become very full somewhat soon. This was made entirely of scrap wood and that god awful huge bench I had moved prior. Add some peg board to the back, maybe a power strip, small shelf on top and bobs your uncle. I don’t actually have an uncle bob, but if I did…

Progress on so many things of late. New vehicle that I’ll be holding onto for some time, lots of wood work. Fall has been back breakingly busy, winter should calm down a bit.

The garage has another scratch build organizing table. I wanted a place for sprays and fluids.
IMG_3810.jpeg

The storage room is nearing completion. Decided to turn it into a little bitty bar. While I was at it.
IMG_3765.jpeg
IMG_3726.jpeg

I acquired my new project. 73 javelin chassis that was blasted and primed some 28 years past and sat in a garage waiting for the day. Along with it comes 2.5 or so cars worth of parts. Some parts good, others long past prime, all need sorting to see what I need.
IMG_3791.jpeg
IMG_3790.jpeg
IMG_3794.jpeg

I managed to get to out of 3 motorcycles in there as well, not terrible for now. Once I get a good deal of it together, this car is going to live outside under a cover. I’ll build a shed one day for it. Till then, clean assemble repeat.

The bar got its inaugural use the other night for a Christmas party. 4 of us guys sat around and smoked some scotch, drank a few beers. Odd observation, after smoking some Old Forester 1910 with some cherry. Opened up a modeling and it had a sort of tomato like taste, confirmed by the others. I enjoyed it, will be experimenting again with that.

Today was continuing on the car. I have to clean up the firewall before I can bolt things to it, so that’s where I spent my morning.
IMG_3891.jpeg

I’ve been taking a few things apart like the brake assembly and cleaning it up. I don’t think I’ll be using half of what I have sitting there, but it’s ready. I have to find the manual pedal setup I believe should be sitting aside with other parts.
IMG_3892.jpeg

Last up for the evening is adding a bottle opener to the beer caddy my brother made for us guys years ago for Christmas. I have openers for my brother and bro in law. Finishing touch, for now.
IMG_3893.jpeg

That’ll do it for the moment. I think next up is taking the brake booster and checking that it doesn’t leak. If it doesn’t, it’s ready to get the refurb.
