That is commonly referred to as a KMG style grinder. They are very popular with the knife making guys (Where I found out about them). I built one from scratch, super simple and relatively cheap to build. Especially considering what they charge for them new. With a rubber contact wheel and a flat platen you an just about replace a bench grinder. Mine has a 3hp IIRC motor with speed control. You can feed 1" square bar stock into it with a 36grit belt and it just eats it about as fast as you can feed.

What do you want to do with the belt grinder? What is your budget? Do you have any tools currently to build one? Grizzly makes a few nice ones (cheaper) Kamalazoo makes a nice one (not as cheap).

One last thing, I would personally stick with a 2" wide ~72" long belt or shorter. The wider belts aren't as handy IMHO. The 72" length is very common and offers just about all grits that sand paper is made in.

I have a Delta belt grinder that I really like. But the 2" 72" and interchangable wheels is a great +.

Used mostly for making useful small house projects, car parts and exhaust.

My Delta is a fixed 48 x 6" I think with a disk on the side.

Budget.....tough one I like the DIY idea. But maybe +\- $500. I know thats not much but.....

I have a KMG and love it. It is one of the most used tools in my shop.

If I had to do it again, I would get the TW-90.

Hell, I might get it too.

Wilton Square Wheel is probably the most versatile
followed very closely by the Burr King (more power)

the Baldor 2 wheel is way behind

the combo belt/disc grinders don't do either well

disc grinders?
Apex is the top dog here.....but the Taiwanese 3HP 20" models work.....the disc will coast for 23 minutes

I use a small 1 x 42 size kalamazoo belt sander that I like very much, but as the others have said if you are going to do any kind of large work you will need a much bigger model and those babies start to run in the thousands for a good belt sander.

Some places sell kits that you can mount to your existing grinder or you can make your own design if you have a welding outfit, or sometimes they come up for sale in your local area.
