belt sanders?????

Hey quick question. Going to be in the market for a quality but affordable belt sander here soon. Own two sears models now the little one is allright 1" x 42" 1/2 horse and a 4"x 36" 1/3 horse which is a POS ! Doing a cm roll cage and building an exhaust sys out of 304 stainless, so a rounded sanding edge is a must. Any body have recomendations ?

i'm not familiar with those Sears belt sanders. i use two enco units and i'm very happy with them , they get the job done.... the 12" disc sander is enco part # 163-4805 and is about $175...it has a 1 hp motor

the combination belt/disc witha 48 x 6 belt and 9 inch disc is #163-4900.its abot $225 and has a 3/4 hp motor

Well I don't know what is affordable for you, but I do know who makes quality belt sanders like your looking for. BurrKing makes the some of the very best narrow belt (<4") sanders made today. I have had my 960 for about a year now and I just purchased a 760 this week ( will have it next week so no pics yet) I put a VFD on the 960 and it's just a super machine. Slack, platten, or contact sanding it works great!

I just looked at this thread but see you folks are talking about bigger sanders. About 10 years ago we were in Aladdin, South Dakota on a poker run. They were having belt sander races. What a kick that was. They had tracks as wide as the sander and plugged in so the starter gave them power at the same time. The cords of a certain length dragged behind and yanked appart at the finish line. Shutdown like a drag strip. It was a terribly hot day or we would have stayed longer.

Do you know the pricing on those units? Looked on their website and they are what I need but you have to send for a price quote. That tells me its going to be big bucks . Grainger has a dayton belt/disc 1 horse for 250.00 I'm thinking about, unless burr-king is affordable

Yes, the BurrKing stuff is not in the same price range as the imported dayton units, but they are not even close to the quality of the BurrKing stuff. I got the 960 used for about $600 with out the stand and VFD, a good price. It sells for about $1600 new in the basic setup. When you get a stand and their VFD model your at about $2500 new. I paied $760 for my model 760 with a burrking stand. I hope it's in good shape I will know this next week when it gets here. New it's about $1800 with the stand, I don't know if I will put a VFD on it or not.

So where do you get them used? Also what is the VFD? I want to sand and polish the stainless tubing, don't they have an attachment for that? Hope you don't mind all the questions, but there's not a lot of info out there.

Here is one that selling on e-bay. It's in nice shape, but I don't know how high it's heading. I have a feeling that it's going to be high, but you never know. VFD = variable frequency drive, allows you to adjust the speed of a 3 phase motor (and some models run on single phase). I really like the A&B powerflex 4 and 40 drives. I think that they make one that runs on 120volts and makes 230v 3phase out, but I'm not sure. For sure they make a single phase 230 in 3 phase 230 out.
On the sander you can get a really nice finish on your stuff by turning the speed of the belt down. As for the attachment for the tubing, are you talking about the outside length? If so the only place I have seen that sells them is here ( at least for an automatic machine) If you talking about just the ends and stuff you don't need any other attachment for the BurKing. You can get off set contact arms that allow you to say deburr the inside of an opening but I use the dynafile for that.
