Let me start by saying I am only trying to be informative on here for some that prefer this type of bench...it's not for all but if this is of interest to you I will be loading photos as I go so as to show some people how I do mine. I like them and have built a few...they are sturdy, store some things out of sight and I think pretty nice looking....
First pic is a finished bench and the rest will be added as this one is built...

Why arent all the 2X4s turned on edge for the top? Thats where the maximum strength is.

Was curious about this as well.

I choose to flat lay the bench top 2 x 4's to give more support surface to the actual bench counter for strength since the counter is 3/4" particle board and they are only spanning 28"...cut a 2 x 4 28" and flat lay it across 2 blocks and stand on it...it's fine...plus it does give more head room inside the cabinet....

How are you going to support the 3" of overhanging particle board?

I don't...but I do run a 1x2 Poplar doubler underneath that is glued and screwed to the edge to give it strength and make the table top look thicker.

One thing I would add is 2x4 vertical supports from the ledger board to the block foundation. That way no matter how hard you beat on the bench the ledger won't sag. That's how I did mine.

Looks awesome, cant wait to see how you finish it out. Do you use the iron on laminate or just paint? I always worried about the longevity of the iron on stuff. I need to do this on the other side of my garage.

Just formica, contact cement and a router with an edge bit
