Bench Caster Fittings

My new steel work benches are heavy and difficult to move without scratching the painted garage floor because the legs are hollow steel tubes with sharp edges. I wanted to use plastic inserts in the legs but could not find any to fit, probably because the benches are foreign made and the legs are metric size tubes.

Searching the net, I found these mounting fittings for casters. They are substantial chunks of aluminum with lips that extend under the leg bottom. The supplier shows them for use on 3/4" plywood cabinet sides but I expanded the hole sizes and used heavier bolts for my steel leg benches. The mounting holes for the casters take up to a 1/2" shaft but I used smaller sizes because I don't move the benches often and didn't want to raise the table height too much.

If anyone is interested, they came from Rockler Woodworking and Hardware from Medina, MN. Cost was $52 delivered for eight sets.

Mine was built a bit different. A bit lighter, perhaps. I welded a piece of 1/8 flat on the pottom of mine with a hole drilled in the center. I used 1/4-20 threaded knurled pop rivets. I forget the actual name for them. The rivet gun pulls it tight and upsets rivet tightly against the flat steel. The knurling really bites in and prevents rotation. Its been in service for a few years.
