bench grinder/belt sander

Ok, in the market for a badass bench grinder, sander combo. I make a lot of tabs (shock tabs, 4 link brackets, that nature) as well as notching tube, and other tube work. Read a lot of pirate, and one of the vendors sells the jet 1hp multitool, which i can get a better deal on somewhere else. I like the design, but just need the extra push i guess, whats your guy's opinion?

I have 2 bench Wilton 1 HP bench grinders , the 5.5 amp and the 7.7 amp and use two different grit wheels on the 7.7 amp grinder and dwo different wire wheels on the 5.5 amp grinder.

The 5.5 amp grinder is fine for wire wheels but i would go with the 7.7 amp from stones. I do a lot of heavy steel and the Wilton 7.7 has no problem keeping up. The Wilton and Jet grinders are of the same company so quality is very high at a great price.

The bench sander works great at 2/3 max HP . I have found if you need more power you would need a lot better belt and disc , you'll tear the heavy duty belts before / as it would bog and you dont need a lot of extra power for belt sanders ........... if so then it should of gone through the bench grinder in the first place.

These tools posted are items i have in my own metal working home shop i use on heave steel and are over 3 years old so no problem with quality.

Also it gives you two tools for less then the one posted.

yeah, i would say you got close to whats in those grinders, just in the metal....but i am sure its strong as hell.

Nice info, definitely will check out some different options before i buy this one tool.

I was thinking a 2" belt is kinda small, especially if you where working on 2 1/2" tube, or bigger stuff... why didn't you mount the craftsman belt sander to the big stand. And is having one with wire wheels come in handy that much. Seems like i don't use them much for my angle grinders...?

btw, there are some awful reviews on that craftsman belt sander, if i go this route i would probably look at the next one up.

The Delta 6X48 from Lowes is actually a very decent option for a fairly heavy duty unit.

Like you, I was in the hunt for an industrial duty belt sander and had gone as far as designing my own. Having an immediate need, I was in Lowes and saw a Delta belt sander in a damaged carton so I talked the manager into giving it up for less than 1/2 of it's "sticker" price. Had I not gotten it for $125, I would not have bought it, but I am glad I have it - it's a nice little machine.

If you really think you need an industrial grade belt sander or disc sander you may want to visit burrking.com and take a look. These Burr King units are very heavy duty and built to last. Be aware they are expensive! I happened to get an old unit without motor that was probably at least 20 years old from a garage sale for $20.00 tht my wife says looked like a piece of junk. With some cleanup, paint and a new motor from Grizzly it looks and operates as good as new. I probably have $150.00 in it total but I don't think I will ever wear it out.

What are you doing with 2.5" tube? I guess you're not building cages, 'cause that vehicle would have NO headroom.

I just re-looked at that Craftsman bench sander and noticed a few things have changed from when i bought mine , first the RPMs on mine is 3600 , mine weighs about 80 lbs and the one on the web site says it weighs 45 lbs and is 2200 RPM and mines is about twice the amps more then the listed model...............So...........It looks like something was changed in the last 3 years.

Looking over different models .......this one at Sears looks more like the craftsman i have by the list product specs

Your about right on the cost per the steel but its all scrap , I buy a lot of large steel scrap from local auctions and such and this came froma pile i bought @ 1500 lbs of steel for around $65.00

Its not the normal size steel i use in the shop for things i build , I get all my steel from the local steel yard but its nice to have a lot of large scrap metal for needs whatever comes across the shop.

I run a Millermatic 210 in the home shop . Do a little O/A welding ( very little anymore ) I use the O/A mostly for heat and bend, and run a Miller Spectrum 625 plasma.

Not a fancy shop but its all business as how its set up.

no i definitely wouldn't build a cage out of that size tube.....but it would be very possible for lower links, and so forth. I always try to buy overkill if i can.


i am definitely buying one of those wilton bench grinders, now just have to decide on a sander. Wonder how much those kalamazoo sanders cost...i believe they are known for their strength in dependability in other bigger tools (mills and such)

Now if your wanting to shape steel with a belt sander then YES one would need a big powerfull motor.

For a pro shop belt sander you looking at $500.- $1500. to get ya started. I guess it all depends on how much your going to use it and what your going to use it for.
