Hi All,

I recently bought this grinder at a flea market and I want to rehab it but I can’t for the life of me see any manufacturer info on the name plate beside what looks like three letter IZ-B. Does anyone know who makes this bench grinder and what model it might be? It’s 120volt. Thank you

The first and most important thing to do is to replace the grinder stones. Hit them with a hammer and break them. You do not know the history of these wheels. I had a new grind-stone explode. I had the stone side guards in place. If the guards are missing, this is the first thing you need to replace for your safety.
If you are unable to see a model number on the tag, take careful measurements of what appears to be open guards and call BALDOR PARTS.
While it may not be necessary to include the shaft size when you call Baldor, it will not hurt your request. An approximate grind stone size is important. If this were my grinder, I would get a coarse and a fine stone.
If you are able, buy grinder stones Made in USA. Norton is a good start. Baldor may be able to supply.
I bought a Baldor buffer model 333B. I think the "B" is for buffer. Your grinder might be a 333G. Google for better and more information.

I bought a used STERLING drill bit grinder. It came without a guard. I made the 16ga guard you see in the picture.
The guard may have been taken off and lost, More likely, this Sterling may be old enough to not have had a guard when it was made.
Making a guard is easy enough. It is unlikely you have a machine to form the center bulge in the guard, I would make a center hold just big enough to allow the shaft nut to pass through the guard.

IMHO, you have a gem in the rough. Between Baldor customer service and the numbers on the bearings you should be able to locate all the parts you may need to polish your find into a real gem.

Thank you so much for all the advice. Yes the first thing I was going to do is get rid of the old wheels since I don’t know anything on how they were used. I won’t use it until. I have end caps. I’ll contact baldor for support. Thanks again

I never seen one online searching with a built in water bath tray if that’s what the little built in tray is?

If you take a reading of the OHMs (for the voltage it is wired for) you can figure out the HP with OHM's law once you figure out the amperage. If you open up the housing likely the bearings are "open" bearings,( no shields) (with maybe some wavy washers) and felt pads. Bearings, if open could be re-pact, you would need to thoroughly clean/dry the bearing before adding grease. If you want to have shielded bearings I would recommend SKF E2 energy saving bearing, bit more expensive but the motor will run a bit cooler use a bit less juice (Ebay possibly, shop around price various considerable) . Once you have the HP and wheel size you should be able to identify the Baldor model. Given that, Ebay has used parts listed for specific models, it may take awhile for your parts to show on Ebay. Forget about paying retail prices unless you are rich.

Bearings....

I taught my apprentices to break grinding wheels if they fail the ring test or with any other visible defects [usually confirmed by a journeyman] as if you throw what looks like a good wheel in the garbage some unthinking " do-gooder" will rescue the bomb to be. Therefore this is a real good safety practice, also someone with limited funds may try and save themselves some $$. [Being a refuse recycler (dumpster diver/ garbage picker) myself I can identify with this lifestyle choice😀] Harry

My Dad used to call those cobbled together grinders, "Hardness testers." When the stone came apart, it tested the hardness of someone's head. We had a neighbour who was running his grindstone over speed., I blew apart and killed him.

i've been using a twin to this for over 30 years, never with a stone though. Open soft bristle wire wheel for cleaning odd parts that you cant get to with a guard. Years of practice in standing the right way limits eating the stray wires the wrong way.

yes it's dangerous but I've certainly done worse.

I've used similar and many open wheel grinders. Care, skill and brains, are required!
That's the reason use of these (Dangerous) machines is considered a "Skilled Trade"!
Dangerous and Stupid are neighbours, build the fence and keep them separated, be cautious and keep them digits attached! Gaurds offer protection but/and offer pinch points, a guard isn't a brain substitute. The signature tag line "Nothing is Foolproof for a sufficiently motivated Fool" comes to mind [sorry I don't remember whom is due the credit]. Harry

Virtually all Wissota grinders had an integral quench tray, as well as some vintage Dayton (Doerr Electric) models. I have NEVER seen a Baldor with a tray.
