I'm trying to gain some knowledge and information about a bench grinder I picked up this weekend. It is a Porter Cable Model 547. It has some age to it but runs smooth as silk. I'd like to get a rough idea how old it is and find out if I can find a parts manual for it somewhere. My searches on Google turned up nothing.

Porter cable always made top notch tools, and that one looks like a beast, so I think you have a winner. do you have the tool rest for the left side? Or can you make one using the right as a model?

Why can't I find a decent old grinder around here??? Best I've been able to do is an old 60's Craftsman, which is decent, but not Baldor or even the level of that one of yours...

I do have the tool rest for the left side but it's missing the attachment bolt. That's an easy fix. I also have the eye shields for both sides however on one, the glass is cracked. The glass is a laminated safety glass and I'm considering replacing it with Lexan.

I agree, this thing is a beast and it is sure to last a long time. I'm happy with the $60 purchase price.

Yes, Porter Cable made excellent circular saws and other portable electric hand tools.

No, it's not a given Porter-Cable made their own grinders. There were about three manufacturers who made all the bench grinders for Black & Decker, Stanley, Skil, Van Dorn, Dayton, Craftsman, et al, back in the day.

Maybe, someone who really knows can tell us for certain who was the manufacturer.

Off topic just a tad. For parts these guys have what is needed most of the time.
