bench grinder question (block grinder)

And if you look at the stone it has like this extension thing on it.
So today I was making my make shift shield (I brought it to work and they need a guard OSHA) so I was looking at it and noticed it had set screws so I took it off.
Anyone have any idea what its for? Ive never seen one. Was it factory? Here a look at it off

Maybe someone was using it for a buffer and needed to get the the pad away from the motor. I just picked up the same grinder at a swapmeet and it needs guards. Got some more pics on how you made yours? Thanks.

It's an arbor adapter for a plain motor shaft. Not OEM for your grinder. Somebody was probably grinding or polishing something that needed more clearance from the motor housing and added it to the grinder arbor.

DG: you have what we commonly call a Block grinder made for Craftsman back when grinders were made to last. post on the Block grinder thread or read about 1000 pages where there is a lot of good information and rebuilds or repairs of this awesome tool.

Enjoy the read and the guys on that thread are usually very happy to help if you need any information about your new(old) grinder, but it looks like you are pretty handy so you may not.

both member's posts so far are right about the part in your hand being an extension so the previous owner could do buffing or wire wheeling farther away from the motor. on the block thread we have been discussing making some with machined with threads instead of the set screw design so they will work better without vibrating and not deform the existing threads on the block.

The whole reason why I got this thing was because of this forum lol. I really like this grinder just never saw a post like that on the arbor. Thanks for the replies everyone!!

I'll take a few pics before I leave work today and post them here for you. Mind you its not pretty but they work lol

Here's the pictures of the guard I made. Its just a 5/16 (ish) stock bent and treaded with nuts welded on to hold the shield.

Hope this helps. I think I saw in another thread that sears still makes parts for these. I could be wrong though but there has to be a "universal" set online somewhere

DG: you should post this picture of your homemade shield on the block thread and ask that question on where to find new replacement shields. i'm almost positive you won't find a metal framed one anywhere, but a lot of members have been talking about buying some on that thread so you might have a quick answer if you decide to get a matching pair down the road.

If I were to restore it I might try to track them down but the need isn't present at the moment. I'll post the pics in there so people can get some ideas.
