One of the things I haven't had in my shop for a very long time is a grinder. Needed one for a project so I bought a used one for cheap. It vibrates the bench so bad everything falls off! I recall my previous grinder doing the same from the day it was new. Does anyone make a grinder that won't clear the top of the bench? Does this thing have junk bearings?
Thanks!
Bill

First take off the wheels and test the grinder----if it runs smooth you have a well-balanced grinder with good bearings, if it's smooth but noisy you need bearings, and if it still vibrates then it a cheap grinder and likely needs to be trashed.

If it runs smooth install the wheels one at a time and you will quickly see the problem is wobbly or out-of-round wheels.

I have found the wire wheels sometimes cause vibration. Like said above start with no wheels and then try adding wheels one at a time.

Anything that vibrates that bad can be fatal. There are reported cases where a piece of the grinding wheel flew off striking someone in the head. Try to always stand to one side until the grinder reaches operating speed before standing directly in front of it.

TR: i agree with all that is said so far which is a very good start to find your issues. i also started a grinder safety 101 thread last year with some very graphic video where you can see what a 1750 or 3450 RPM grinder's broken wheel's damage can do.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263083&highlight=grinder+safety+101

once you do find out the issues of your grinder if it's just needing a new wheel you might also mount the grinder to your bench with some rubber foot pads designed for your grinder.

BTW can you post a few pictures of your grinder with the specs and brand name so we might be able to help more.

You need a vintage grinder, Rockwell/Delta, Baldor, or others, out there.

Baldor still makes a nice grinder, but they are not cheap.
