I’m trying to find a replacement clip for an older bench grinder. These clips are used to hold the shields on. I could machine some new clips if I knew what these were made of.

Any ideas? They look like lead but are much harder. I’d say magnesium but that seems like an odd choice.

FWIW, I'm leaning towards machining replacements out of aluminum. However... I get the sense these were made out of a "fragile" material for a reason - either to make adjustment easy, or to break away in the event of a catastrophic jam. Looking online, newer grinders might use a piece of bent steel... I tend to overthink these sorts of things.

That being said, I have easy access to free aluminum stock and a hefty bridgeport... much easier than finding a piece of steel the right size/shape.
