make an appointment to buy it and run out the door if the person says it works. those guards and that age and style grinder are not everyday items you will find.

good luck

if he said it runs head out the door now. also when you get there plug it in and see if it makes any funny sounds. if it purrs just pay him. if it doesn't it might need new bearings and many guys have done threads on replacing them. the parts on this vise are worth more than your cost to somebody restoring one.

good luck

That's a easy one to change bearings in. I did my 3/4 HP and also changed the centrifugal switch in it. I'll go back and look where I bought it from in case anyone needs.
Steevo, could you please post a pic of yours showing the tag? The one I bought had no tag and I'd like to compare.
Thanks
Craig

It may just be the picture, but it looks like the left side guard is bent inward. Could it have been dropped ?

Jake,
i see what you see now upon a very close look, but maybe it's the angle of the picture. the wheel is off which makes it a little suspect that is for sure. now if it was dropped wouldn't it have cracked the cast iron guard? or make an awful sound once it is plugged in even with the wheel off?

i think at the price he is getting it for if he plugs it in and it doesn't sound like metal chewing up or some other ugly sound then it's a great buy. i bet someone would buy just the guards for what he is getting it for if it has a fatal flaw not seen when he picked it up. don't you?

Just the side covers would sell for at least the $25 admission fee, maybe more. Didn't someone recently pick up a grinder with mid-level exhaust ports that needs new covers ?

I LOVE living in the Midwest. Emailed Saturday, he held it until Monday at 5:00 for me just on an email. Are schedules did not work out on Sunday and I did not want to drive the 20 minutes on Saturday. I could not get the $25 out fast enough.

Yes, Rochester MN

any more pictures? also there was some concern if it might have been dropped, but original picture might not have been at a good angle to tell. did you plug it in yet and how did it sound?

nice find and glad you managed to get it to your house.

also details on the grinder's make, model and specs if you can read them so we might have for future reference if another one looking like this one arises. man those are some stout wheel guards.

I will try and get some more pictures (not good at uploading them).

1/2 HP 3450 RPM. I can not read much of the tag. I will try and find a seriel number or something.

It runs PERFECTLY. The seller had removed the other wheel as it was newer and he wanted to keep it.

Any recommendation to a brand of wheel or would a wheel from Lowes work as good as wany?

Well done on getting it. Will need pics when possible. As for grinding wheels, Norton is the brand I use, about $18 per. In fact, Zoro tools is having a 30% off sale *today* from 11-2pm CST, could be a good time to jump on one:

I guess you would call it lenses. The metal brackets are there. I have seen some for sale, but I am not sure how they clamp on to the metal brackets.

I think its just the pic perspective. I doubt those guards will bend much. break, yes...

Actually I have a similar Dayton grinder that was dropped and one side was bent. Cracks were there but not readily visible. It will be a buffer some day LOL.
