I have a cheap tool sale 3/4 hp - 8" bench grinder and even with the wire wheel when you bear down slightly it stalls. I'm sure there is no way to make it stronger so what would you recommend in 8" bench grinder that won't break the bank ( around 200 bucks or less ) .

Honestly ,

I would recommend an old one and perhaps increase your bank. You do not specify 110 / 220 but I took a trip around your CL and Ebay and you're out of luck at that price range.

Is it stalling when plugged directly into an outlet or is this happening when plugged into an extension cord? If the latter try directly into an outlet and see if it still stalls down. I've had several tools that would stall due to (too long or undersized) extension cords limiting the current they needed to run right.

As for buying another one, what "Cypher" said. If an old one can't be found, Grizzly has a Dewalt for about $130 + S&H. HF has several (<$100) but are most likely along the lines of what you have now.

Good luck!

I have had the same kind of grinder for probably 30+ years. I almost exclusively use it for wire wheeling things I want to clean up.

Bought it at whatever the equivalent of Harbor Freight was in the early 80's. If it dies tomorrow I can't complain in the slightest. I suggest you use it and buy a second, stronger bench grinder for the stuff that matters more.

Thanks guys I don't use it all the time but maybe I should up the bank and its plugged in directly to 110 volt outlet. There are other needs in the shop so I just didn't want to spend a fortune.

REDUCE the bank!

Get an app that will notify you when a bench grinder comes up on CraigsList.

You are looking for a Craftsman block grinder for around $50, or a Dayton or other old and solid US made grinder for $50 to $100.

Or wait for top of the line like Baldor for $100 to $200.

I've got a HF cheapo 3/4hp with 8" wire on one side and grinding block on the other. Runs every time I need it and never gives me a problem.

A simple fix that might hold you over until you find the bench grinder you want is to use a 6" wire wheel on your 8" existing unit, less diameter means less drag resistance when you lean into it when wire brushing parts.
When we owned our polishing and plating shop, my dad could stall a 14" wheel on a 3 hp polishing lathe (buffing machine). Also check the grinder's RPMs, 1725 is slow but 3450 is better for your kind of work. It's all about the surface speed of the wheel.

Jet grinders are great. I have a couple older USA produced grinders and the Jet runs right with them.
