Balane, what is your daily use bench grinder?
I change them out periodically depending on what comes through. Right now I have 3/4 and 1/2 hp block grinders, the early 70's style for both. I use the 3/4 hp for wire wheel and polishing, the 1/2 has stone wheels on it. I keep the worst ones for myself and both of these are absolutely beat but run decently.

Edit, here's a photo. I've changed wheels out since this was taken though.

Check your craigslist for wilton grinders as well. Mine is made by Wissota and is an exact wissota clone. Ilike it bbetter than my Baldor

I check CL for all "grinder" in our area and a couple areas out. There just isn't many for sale around here. I'm usually patient and will come up with something, but if have been looking pretty hard for 6 months or so.

let me ask this, is there such a thing as too big of a bench grinder? If money were no object would a 10, 12 or 14" be usefull or PITA?

I think anything larger than 8 would be overkill.

Once you hear one of those machines whirring, you know it could take a finger with the workpiece and put it a distance away from your hand...

Baldor also made grinders for other companies like Rockwell. They can be had much cheaper than the actual Baldors. I picked up a good used 6" for $50 from an overpriced used tool store. If the owner had clued in it was really a Baldor (made for Rockwell) he would have charged $120+. You will be surprised how much more power a Baldor has than an offshore grinder even if the hp is the same. Imo unless you are doing lots of fab work I think a 6" grinder is more than adequate.
