Don't buy a cheap, low HP grinder. I bought one and it didn't have enough power to sharpen a lawn mower blade.

I am afraid that between $40 to $60.00 dollars you will only be able to pick up a new chinese bench grinder. Now if you had some more money to spend you could pick up a chinese Jet bench grinder and not have to worry about buying any parts in the future; (backed by a large company).

Just my two cents but if I was in your shoes I would also hunt for the old craftsman block grinders or any older USA made bench grinders.

Woody...........how much extra $$ are we talking? May be able to bump it up to the $100 range.

Also what HP would be good to have?

Definitely look used, OLD craftsman, baldor, walker turner, OLD delta. A 6" will do almost everything in the home shop. I have two, one with grinding wheels setup for sharpening lathe tools and drill bits other side has a dedicated wheel for sharpening TIG tungsten. The other has two wires wheels on it for cleaning.

One is a c list old delta that I picked up for $20. Needed bearings, but now runs smooth as silk. Other is a late 1990's cman, that I bought new on clearance for $50. Came with a stand that I sold for $20. Nice grinder, not sure what they go for new these days from sears though.
