Sorry about the pun.
I'm looking for a 6" bench vice.
My primary use is going to be gun smithing projects, but I'm an auto tech and may use it for some car projects in the future. I'm not a tool abuser.
I would love a USA made vice, but I'm not ignorant and know that my budget of $250 or less won't get me there.
Also, I've got Amazon prime so something available with free shipping would be even better.
I've been doing so much reading my eyes are burning.
I'm hoping maybe you all can help me look in the right direction.
I have been searching my local craigslist for something used, but I haven't found anything within reasonable driving distance.
Thank you!

For your situation of needing vise mainly for gun smithing, you might really like the rotating and swiveling feature of this 750-DI Yost 5" vise:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CBL62HQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It's not most robust vise but very flexible and $193 price is not bad for new. These often pop up on CL in the $50 to $100 range.

I wish one of those 750 DI's would pop up around here. Just the cheap versions everyone breaks. With 60,000 PSI ductile iron castings it's probably as robust as most USA machinists vises.

Where? Your profile says KS & OK. I'm not far from either and have family in OKC and KC. I'd love to find one of those for $50-$100. I've had it my Amazon cart for ages but keep finding higher priority tools since I already have a decent Columbian.

^ ^ They do pop up on occasion. The last one I remember was in Tulsa but guy wanted way too much as it was "still new in box" so IIRC he wanted around $125 so I didn't bother as a long drive.

Here's more normal listing for Larin rotating vise for $95
http://madison.craigslist.org/tls/5360601781.html

Thus, there are at least 3 brands with same rotating vise: Yost, Wilton, and Larin

Same style and features, not actually the same vises though...

^ ^ ^ Right. I should have said same STYLE rotating vise.

Edited my post to add style.

I'm hoping to score one on CL in $50 range and setup a welding table. Don't really care which brand, just the rotating style for ease in moving parts around.

I know it's imported. Looking at Amazon reviews shows some problems with the holes drilled for the alignment pin being off, people NOT liking the serrated swivel base clamps because the have to loosen up the nuts more (?) and shipping box damaged and vise scratched.

Not a single one says anything about it being broken.

And the Yost guy usually gets on there and offers to take of the problem. How many other imported vises get that kind of attention?

Here's an interesting comparison.

5" jaw rotating vises
Irwin 4935505 35.3 pounds shipping weight
Yost 750-E 35.4 pounds shipping weight
Grizzly G7062 42 pounds shipping weight
Wilton 69999 43.9 pounds shipping weight
Bessey BVMP5 44.5 pounds shipping weight
Yost 750-DI 63 pounds net, 84.2 pounds shipping weight

The Yost 750-DI has more metal and higher quality 60,000 PIS Ductile iron compared to the 30,000 PSI cast iron of the other vises.
