Other than portability I wouldn't see much use for it. There are certainly times when you want portability though. If you want to run a nail gun in the house to do baseboards and don't want to drag around the bigger compressor. If the price were right I'd have one, but until now the need hasn't justified the cost.

If you have a big one you can get by with a portable tank that you fill from the big one.

I've got a 1 gallon compressor/tank that is just great when I want to do some work with the brad nailer in the house or in some far flung corner of the yard. To be honest that's all it will run, but for the $20 it cost, it doesnt owe me any money

Definitely good for the portability aspect. I don't know about your 40 gal. compressor, but most are not very portable. I end up doing a lot of trim in the house, and my pancake compressor will go anywhere and I don't need to run a hundred feet of air hose all through the house to put up door trim.
If you cannot imagine doing anything with it except air rachets and filling tires, then it has no utility for you.

I was more referring to the older ones I see. I guess they would just be the older versions of the modern pancake compressor.

I know a trim carpenter that got tired of dragging air hose all through a house doing door and window trim.
He got to 5 gal portable tanks with 10 feet of hose.
He keeps the compressor in the back of van running off an extension cord and keeps one tank hooked up to the compressor all the time.
He swaps them out as needed,

He claims he can do three typical bedrooms with doors, windows, closets, baths, etc before a swap is needed.

I bought a 1 gallon compressor on sale for portable purposes. Taking to the cottage, when picking up vehicles with the trailer and especially for using a small air nailer. It has a 1/4" 6 foot coil attached to it that is great.

Get one when the price is right and you will find uses for it.

When I worked in the floor laying business, we used small C02 tanks to run a staple gun from. No compressor needed, easy to carry, lasted weeks before refilling.
