Benchtop Drill Press Recommendations

I am currently restoring a Craftsman 8” Bench Top Drill Press. However, I have run into a few issues and I am considering replacing it. I am not opposed to getting a used press, this 8” press was a used press when I got it, but I am also considering a new press.

So, I tinker, I work with wood, metal, and plastic alike. I do not need the most arcuate press, but I also don’t want a piece of ****. I have a15 ½” Craftsman Floor Drill Press and it runs great. The benchtop would be for smaller stuff and serve as a back-up should the floor press go down.

I am looking for something in the 10 or 12” range and sub $300.00. I really like the features and reviews of the Craftsman 21914 but I do not think it is made anymore so I would need to hunt down a used one in good condition. On the new side, a lot of reviews point to the Wen 4214. I have never owned any Wen tools and do not know a lot about them. I should also mention that I have zero interest in the Harbor Freight tools.

So I am looking for yalls recommendations and suggestions.

I just bought an older, circa 1980 used benchtop machine. I'm quite impressed with the quality. Negligible runout on the quill either retracted of extended.

revived to ask if the cheap ones are any good?

I see Benchtop drill presses going for $50, $80, etc. I don't have space for a floor stander, and don't use a drill press very often, but have a few dozen holes I want at 90o for a couple of projects. An el cheapo might be worthwhile if it's any good.

thoughts?

brands?

At work we have a Benchtop drill press from Harbor Freight and honestly it works fine we also have the floor model as well and it works fine no complaints just be sure you have good drill bits of course. I know you probably don’t think it’s a good drill press but they really are we use ours to drill through metal mostly or rubber or plastic but it never has issues or nothing and has always worked.
