Bend-Pak XL-9X issue

Hey guys,

I have a Bend-Pak XL-9X installed in my garage, it has always worked great for me, but just last weekend I noticed when you raise it up oil spray's out of the ram, there seems to be some sort of check valve there. It isn't leaking where it threads into the cylinder, but out the head of the part. Does anyone have some input on what this part is (if not a check valve) and where replacement parts can be bought? The lift has a manufactured date of 10-2000 so way out of warranty. I looked through my manual but the only parts diagrams in there are for the motor/pump assembly. I need to get a parts break down on the rams.

Here is what I am talking about...

The problem I am facing is I have my Polaris RZR "Stored" up all the way, and a car under it, I need to get them out but I don't want to operate the lift until this problem gets sorted out. Also this part is on the other side ram and has no issues.

Looks like a vent port. Is it possible your getting blow by of the internal seal?

Prob just need a rebuild of the cylinder. Bendpak can surely help you get the parts. Or you could prob take the ram to a hydraulic shop local and they can check it out and replace the seals.

Does it do this every time you raise the lift or was this a one time deal?? How long has it been since you've had the lift ALL the way to the top??

What I'm getting at is that this may not be real serious issue. Any hydraulic cylinder will have a certain amount of leakage past the piston seal. In double acting cylinders you never notice it since there is always oil on both sides of the piston. In this case you have a single acting cylinder with pressurized oil on only one side of the piston. Each time the lift is raised there will be some small leakage the piston seal, and over a 11 or 12 year lifetime of up and downs there will be some amount of accumulation.

I wouldn't get too shook up just yet. Watch it and see what it does. Raise it all the way to the top and give the oil a chance to all drip out of the vent. Do this a few times empty, and then raise a decent size load a few times and see if you get more oil.

If your normal operation of the lift does not include fully extending each time, I suspect you simply squeezed out a bit of oil that has accumulated there over a period of time.
Do some evaluation and seen what you can figure out. I doubt that it's a huge issue, and if you contact BendPak I suspect they'll tell you the same.

If for whatever reason you decide you just can't use the lift any more, send me your address and I will come solve your problem...........

Wow, fast replies! Thanks guys! Well maybe I need to clarify a few things.

This lift has had MINIMAL use, I bought it 2 years ago from a friend that bought it new, and then used it a handful of times.

When I do lift something it SPRAYS out, not dribbles, but 1/4 hose size of full volume comes out. This just happened 2 weeks ago while lifting my RZR (1000 lbs) and just before that I used it to lift my friends Durango with no problems. SO something just gave out I think.

The other side that may or may not be an issue is temperature, It is currently about 40 out in the garage, it is heated but not all the time, just while I am working out there. Is it possible I have something that needs to heat up (seals etc) to prevent this? Normally I don't use the lift this time of year but lately I have been, but even thought the garage gets up to temp (60 ish) quickly maybe the fluid and internals of the rams are not warmed up yet?

Lastly the last time I used the lift I noticed the left side (one that is leaking) seemed to raise the RZR slower than the otherside (didn't notice the fluid leak until the RZR was all the way up, then saw a puddle on the floor) but it did still lift. not sure if that helps out either.

Also can dirt etc in the lines or anything cause this, reason I ask is that it sat in the pole barn for 2 years before I finally installed it this past summer. It was kept clean, but you never know.

Just got off the phone with local repair place, he told me the ram is shot, needs to be replaced, thinks that will run 600-700 for the part. Said it is made in china and will be hard to have a local shop rebuild it, I will have to call around and see. Problem is if I replace the ram with a new bend pak I will be getting another china unit. I wonder if there are any other alternatives to something made any better or maybe this was a fluke problem. He will call me later today with a solid quote.

Wow. They are asking 600-700 clams, for a Chi-com cylinder, they certainly are very proud of that thing.

If it were mine, for that kind of money, I would sooner take the dimensions and go to a local hydraulics shop and replace the hydraulic cylinder with a dimensional equivalent US-made unit.

Based on the usage you reported, No way should that thing be failing so soon.

or give bailey Hydraulic a call, that's where i replace my loader cylinders on my cheap tractor. they cost less then a rebuild.

Alright finally got the new cylinder ordered.

My local Hydraulic shop charges a MIN 250.00 labor plus parts.
Local Bend-Pak Dealer wanted 495.00 plus tax for cylinder.

I then called up Bendpak direct and ordered the same part for $327.80 plus 42 in shipping.

Just figured I will let you all know in case in the future anyone else runs into a similar situation.

I will rebuild my old cylinder myself and have it on hand as a spare in case the other original one decides to go.
