Does any one have suggestions for homemade exhaust tubing benders? Im too cheap to buy one or haul the car frame to a muffler shop.

I just got done building one from www.gottrikes.com. it's a DIY project and made more for thick walled tubing, for roll cages, bumpers, etc....

But with the right dies, I'm sure it would work great for exhaust.

The biggest "tubing" die that it takes is 2.0" But with some creative mods, I'm sure it can do 2.5"

my total cost will be around $600 with a set of 1.0", 1.5", and 1.75" diameter dies. I've added an air/hydraulic piston instead of pumping a hundred times. The bends are as good as ANY $10,000 bender. Absolutely perfect.

I'll post pics soon.

Believe me... You won't build one for the cost of having a muffler shop do the job... With the price of steel today it will cost you three times the price of a good system... The dies alone will cost you that much.

It would be cheaper to haul the car to a muffler shop and have the work done. Your cost at the shop should be around $175 (going off my experience). Unless you plan on bending a lot of stuff in the future you won't make out in the end.
You can buy pre bent tubing in various sizes from Summit (or others) and cut and fit for your app.

There is someone on www.rx7club.com who made his own bender too, looks very easy. But looking at the steel prices you are most probably cheaper by taking the car to the muffler shop.

i helped a friend do a system recently, mostly because he had the welder, is a perfectionist and didnt trust anyone doing it. trouble was it was 3.5" pipe. measured everything up and had a local semi shop do the bends and welded it all together, ground it smooth and sent it out for coating. if youre comfortable welding everything up just buy the bends or have a shop do your bending and mount it yourself.

Why no buy some tubing thats already bent IE u bends and some strait tubing. Mock it all up and take it to a welder to have it welded. Its just a matter of making witness lines across the cuts.

I have made a few racecar exhausts by buying the tubing pre bent with angles I needed and the straight tubing and then **** weld it all together. I made a side exit exhaust two into one system with the end flattened for clearance on my 65 mustang vintage racecar and did the same for my 1995 Cobra R Mustang Grand Am Cup racecar. Really trick looking systems and they sound awesome.
I am currently working on two identical ITA Neon racecars and will be doing just that again.

You can go to any racecar catalog like HRP, maybe Summit or Jegs and I got mine from MAC Exhaust Products.

LOUD PIPES !!!

You might want to rethink and take your car in to have the exhust done or do the prebent tubing thing. The cost of steel might be cost prohibitive. I work for a steel fabricator and the price as leveled some but it's not going down, in fact we anticipate another increase in the near future.
Luckly for me because I do work for a fabricator I am able to get all my steel for free. I just drug home a piece of 12 ga sheet 2'x8' for the top of my wood work bench. The shop foreman said it was scap, that was after he sheared it for me. I've been thinking about putting diamond wainscoat on the two walls were the drywall is most likely to get punctured. The purchusing guy at work said to tell them if I do so he can place it in stock. So I guess working here has it's advantages. He did say if I want stainless i'll have to pay...them bastards.lol

Sorry to highjack your thread.
