Just recently got this given to me. I was only told that it was made out of bronze and that it doesn't spark when using it. I looked it up... They are only made to order. $300 brand new for this one... :screwy::what:

Pretty neat though.

That is a nice find! Ditto on the BeCu dust. Use Mothers to clean, and paper towels and toss the paper towels when done.

Only the jaws on that wrench are BeCu. The rest is aluminum bronze, except for the barrel nut, which may just be brass, I'm not sure, but it sure isn't BeCu.

I see nothing on the Breylco site indicating any combining of othe rmaterilas:

Berylco Safety Tools will not emit sparks that can ignite volatile materials, chemicals or gasses.Tests have shown that our tools cannot produce a spark to ignite carbon disulfide, which has the lowest ignition point of any substance. Berylco Safety Tools are certified nonsparking by the Factory Mutual Research Corporation.

Berylco Safety Tools are made of high strength beryllium copper which is a copper-based alloy containing approximately 1.8% beryllium. The alloy can be heat treated to hardness ranges of Rockwell C35-45, with tensile strengths up to 190,000 p.s.i. This allows our tools to be precisely forged, cast, formed, machined and hardened to strength levels that cannot be achieved in tools made from aluminum, bronze or brass.

As a result, Berylco Safety Tools provide maximum torque and shear strength plus exceptional wear-resistance.

And the OEM pics don't' show any significant differences in color, so how are you coming to the conclusion that this isn't all BeCu?

I've got a bunch of them. The color difference is not visible when polished (as seen in the catalog), but is clearly visible after they've had a little time to tarnish.

Oh, and they make an aluminum handled version that is the same. BeCu jaws, and some sort of brass barrel nut, but a cast aluminum handle, and a fraction of the weight.

Anyway, nobody is going to use a frightfully expensive bronze alloy that is made to compete with steel wrenches, on a pipe wrench handle that would be traditionally made with cast iron. The handle shape dictates the strength of the material required, and BeCu is ludicrously overkill for the handle.
