lets see, when I owned an automotive machine shop I used my press for axle bearings, wheel studs, front wheel drive bearings, bushings, u-joints, shaft straightening, hydraulic clamping, compressing springs, straightening cylinder heads, and i'm sure i've forgotten many more uses. Now my press is a Nugier 40ton

I used our big press at work recently to clamp and hold a large hydraulic cylinder still while I rocked on it with a 24" pipe wrench and 6 foot cheater. None of our vises would open wide enough to hold it.

Ditto....the SWAG kit makes clean bends. Mine is 50/50 use now between pressing bearings and bending brackets.

Press valve guides valve seats and wrist pin bushings along with the afore mentioned chassis work and bending whatever. When it's not in use doing something productive it holds my work gloves and a beer or whatever.

How do you crush oil filters? Do you have a method?

Breaking kneecaps reeeeeeeeeeeal slow, one pump at a time... damn that's evil.




I used mine for making "adjustments" when installing motorcycle handguards. These things are made from extremely strong aluminum.

I've also used mine to make some custom exhaust adaptors and flares, using trailer balls as mandrels. Worked far better than I thought it would, actually.

I went most of my life without a press, but it's come in handy a hell of a lot more than I ever thought it might.

Just as important is the collection you build up of random strong round stuff to use as adaptors for pushing various things.

Not much you can't do with a press. I cold formed a piece of tube to replace a rotted out section of crossmember on my truck using my 20 ton press. No heat used.

U joints we had a regular oil filter crusher at work. required then you could throw them in the trash. other wise you had to seal them in 55 gal drums and pay to have them crushed.
Saw a show about old trains they had a300 ton press to press wheels off of axles.

You can do destructive weld testing----here's a little I just did today. I laid it so it was resting on the edges of the 2 different plates and let 'er rip! 3/16 to 1/4" mild steel 3-pass weld with Hobart Handler at it's 'max capabilities'. Next, I'll try a single-pass.
