Looking to add a 72” tool box to my garage. Looking at the classic series SO or the 72” USG. Is the price gap worth it for the SO? I’m a homeowner, not a professional but I want something that’s going to last. I just purchased a 34” USG cart (haven’t received it yet) so I’m not sure about USG quality. Any other quality options out there? Help me make a decision😃 thanks guys

What about the Icon? Hit it with a 20% coupon. The new prices on the USG make them less attractive than they once were.

USG would hold up just fine, but i personally got tired of the drawer layout on mine. I couldn't find a used truck box cheaper than I could get a brand new one off the tool truck so I gave up on that idea.

How often do they offer the discount? Wish USG offered the black out package look like they do the 34”

Snap-on classic new is a waste of money, really with snap-on it got be KRL or better .
I would review matco and mac used in case anything decent local area, snap-on tends be over-priced even used but always worth looking/bargaining .
US General do the job fine, just make effort milk sale/coupon/ITC membership/shop manager reduction for a better deal .
Wouldn't hang about too long as china covid policy and russia blitzing east europe going mean prices will be heading in one direction and they already 20 to 30% up in last 18 months .

I really like my 72" from Strictly. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Build quality and layout were what I needed and I've had zero regrets since then. Great customer service, believe they still have a GJ member discount too.

In my case, I wanted not one but two shallow, wide drawers for wrenches, which I didn't see very often in other offerings (aside from truck brands). Mine is basically their previous generation of this one, which still has the same drawer layout:

Just my $.02 but regardless of brand, I think it's a good idea to think about the layout you want and look for that. I was dead set on having those top 3 drawers in this particular configuration, and years later, I have absolutely zero regrets about it.

The big 72" boxes at menards look pretty nice.

That said:

I've got a old Mac that has the long drawer in the bottom, and I really like it and the other big bottom drawer on the left-I have a lot of 3/4" and 1" sockets, and long handled stuff and that heavy stuff lives down in the bottom- which keeps the weight low in the box.

Personally, I'd buy a used so- mac, cornwell, matco, before I'd buy new US general, I think they are built better, and will sell better if you want to change.

Used boxes are always showing up, and at a heavy discount off new pricing.

Are you using the box everyday? If not, I don’t think it’s a good idea to buy a snap on toolbox for the home garage, unless you find one used for a good deal. Or if you’re rich and have money to burn, then go ahead and get the snap on.

Any of the cheaper brands or harbor freight is perfectly fine for home garage use. I’ve had my same snap on KRL setup for 30 years now at work and still happy with it. But my home garage tool boxes are all cheaper brands. Yep my snap on box is way nicer, but for home use, my cheap boxes work just fine.

If you're open to paying for the snap-on but also open to the USG, it seems like the Icon would be a great fit. Deeper and more robust than the USG but not paying for the name like the Snappy.

That said, I have only USG boxes (but several of them) as a hobbyist and they're great for my purposes.

I bought a 73" ICON with two side lockers, stainless steel top, light and a hutch for my home garage. It's definitely a big upgrade from a US general. Sad thing is if China invades Taiwan Icon won't be the same. I did get the 20% off of the most expensive items on the presidents day sale. Paid right as $6700 for the entire package.

Got my 72 from strictly. Been very happy with it. Ordered side locker a year after I got the box. I would order again in a heartbeat.

Im in the same boat as this thread except I'm looking at around a 56" box with a locker and a hutch.

That setup doesn't ****!

Top drawers at 6' high must be pretty tough for most people. Even at 6'5", I don't know what I'd store there

Looking at their website, appears they're similar to Icon cabinet pricing.
(edit - and very nice)

Are you comparing Snapon or USG to ICON? Either way they're not even close. Icon is twice as much as USG and Snapon is (more than) twice as much as Icon

USG 72 In. X 22 In. Triple Bank Roller Cabinet, Red
$1,499.99

ICON 73 In. X 25 In. Professional Roll Cab, Red
$2,999.00

I have been eyeing them up for a while, they seem very well built every time I have fondled them in the store. BUT.....they pulled them off their website, and when I called the lady said that they have had so much trouble getting them they the are just removing them for now. So if you want one, it needs to be in store cuz they cannot order them.

Sooo I ended up getting the 56” USG double bank roller instead today and also bought a 34” full bank service cart (they had to order). I also ponied up and bought a Snap On 40” KHP415. I should be set on tool space for awhile! These 3 are in addition to my 72” Husky and Craftsman set up. No brand loyalty here lol

I'll throw in a recommendation for the Extreme Tools boxes - I got my 72"x30" box last year from Rollcabs.com, and I still remain incredibly happy with both the decision and the tool box.

I was looking at that rollcabs site and saw this add on. I didn't see them for sale separately. Anyone seen something like this? Wouldn't mind it for my 56" box.

Thanks so much for the post here, @javyLSU - so nice of you to give a shout-out and post this beautiful pic of the #CRX723019RC tool box! We're happy you're happy with this tool cabinet! We specifically designed the RollCabs CRX Series boxes to include some upgraded features from the Extreme RX Series Boxes. It carries the same warranty, however the load capacity is 250 lbs. for each set of ball bearing glides, double glide drawers 500 lbs., rubber drawer liners in place of foam drawer liners, and a new thick protective work panel in place of foam pad.

Incredible price drop right now on Extreme Tools' made RollCabs.com Boxes - pick up deals going on too if you're local to NH. Specs compare to name brands. We've been trying to get the word out - you will save a bundle and get very similar specs.

id look into the milwaulkee stuff from HD. i recently got their side locker and its fantastic for the price. not sure on sizes they offer box wise though.

i never have and never will buy a new snapon box. all mine were bought used off CL. most recent was a classic 73 with power drawer, bedliner top for 4k. just gotta make sure its paid off.

I got myself an old mechanics box that's about half as wide but 6 foot tall awhile back pretty cheap. Fits more stuff and it's more organized than the 72" snap on box because it has small drawers and large drawers instead of primarily large ones. Course I still have another box, a carry box, and my desk filled with tools plus I'm currently looking for another decent size carry box. Overall I have an extra 50lbs in the one box compared with the Snap On though.

I'd recommend checking out some old mechanic boxes and get something cheap if you aren't too set on a 72" box.

another thing to consider is the depth. i have a "two" car garage, so the 22" usg i have works out good vs a 25-30" deep box. those extra inches don't seem like much, but in a smaller space it really makes a difference.
I'm in the same boat but a single car garage. I upgraded to the series 2 boxes from the old 18" deep series 1 and that made my floor space seem to shrink significantly. Any deeper than 22"...

For the home shop usg is fine, i went all in on a 72” top and bottom, 26”combo also and added a 34”, 5 drawer and two one drawer carts. Then i picked up all the color matching accessories, at 60yo I’m set for life.
